Guest guest
Hi! My little son Brett has been GFCF since he turned 3 the 1st of Feb. He used to eat almost anything, but now he is even refusing old favorites like applesauce, corn pops cereal, and peanut butter on (GFCF)crackers. The only things he'll eat are hot dogs w/ketchup, popcorn, french fries, potato chips and fruit snacks (gummies). Every afternoon, I make him a fruit smoothie with banana, frozen mixed berries, calcium OJ, rice milk, and his SNT powder, so he gets at least one healthy thing a day. He hasn't lost any weight (since he eats so much " junk " !), but I am concerned about balancing his diet. I offer a variety of foods at every meal, but if his favorites aren't there, he eats nothing. I have read that many kids go on a hunger strike for a week or two after starting the diet, but it's been 6 weeks! Any suggestions (or condolences)? Thanks - Sue

Guest guest
Hi Sue, Don't know if this will make you feel better or worse... but my ds until about the age of three would eat almost anything I put in front of him. I found he stopped being a " good " eater after he was hospitalized for a major gastro infection. The doctor at the time told me that I should give him time to get back to his regular diet after the gastro incident. Well, I been waiting for 8 years now for his diet to get regular again. It has slightly improved with the GFCF diet, but he still won't touch meat or vegetables. I'm still hopeful that in time he'll eat a good variety of foods. Never give up... ( 's mom) HELP! Guest guest
My son has been GFCF since September and still has a very limited diet, heavy on the snacks and junk. However, just last week HE suggested that he wanted chicken noodle soup - so I made some, GFCF of course, even though he calls it his 's! And this week he actually ate the GFCF meatloaf and mashed potatoes I put in front of him (still wouldn't touch the green beans, though!) So it has taken him 5 months to be willing to try new things. I'm hoping this is the start of a trend! For months now he has pretty much alternated between two dinners - balogna, peas and honeydew, or his GFCF pizza. Guest guest
Another thought- all of the > things you listed are high corn content- could he be > craving corn for a high- just a thought, I hope not- > its no fun having to cut corn out- it just struck me > because every food you listed my Jay craved and has > finally reacted so violently to them they had to be > illiminated. I cross my fingers for you- > , I rechecked the foods he will eat, and the good news is that the brands we are using are all GFCF according to the GFCFdiet website. However, you are right: everything he will eat (with the exception of the smoothies) has CORN! Corn syrup, corn oil, corn starch, etc. UGH! So now what? My only (small) consolation is that he refuses to eat corn pops cereal or Gorilla Munch, so maybe its not the corn he's craving. I guess we'll have to try eliminating corn and see what happens... Any problems with canola oil? Thanks- Sue > > __________________________________________________ >
Guest guest
Now I may not say this right but I think canola oil is a long chain fatty acid which ASD kids may not metabolize properly that is the only problem I have come across so far.
