Guest guest
Alice, I can understand your disappointment, and I am sorry. You have done so much for this group. I personally do not feel technically qualified, and am usually unavailable during chat time. It has been very helpful when I have been able to attend. I am sure some others are thinking about volunteering, and just assumed that you had enough volunteers. At least I hope so. Guest guest
Sunny, You don't need to have any technical knowledge. It's very easy to be a moderator. You just need the permission. Additionally, if we had enough volunteer moderators, there would be no need to be there every week. The responsibilities could be broken up so that no one has to be there every week. This chat is now becoming very busy and looks like we need a minimum of 3 moderators each Monday night. I would like to see a moderator have 1 chat a month they are assigned to so that would mean we need about 12 total moderators. Moderators basically are there to make sure that appropriate messages are sent and to keep the chat running smoothly. If there is a problem in the chat with a person - the moderator can remove that person with a very simple command. If there is a problem with the chat program itself, the moderators just need to let me know so that I can contact the chat administrator about that problem. I guess it's like swimming. If you don't step into the water, you don't have any idea how to do it. What is happening right now with Kristie and Laurie is not the least bit fair. These two women have been very caring and willing but they shouldn't be the only ones who are doing this. As most of you know, we have scheduled some very special guest chats and we have one schedule on 3/21 with a specialist in endocrinology and metabolism. This could be the last guest chat we ever have because without additional volunteers to help, I'll be forced to close the Monday night chats. They are very busy right now but too busy for two people to handle weekly. See http://database.azstarnet.com/html/mda/transcripts/20050228Mitochondr ialChat.html which is last Monday night's chat. Guest guest
Alice I will try to attend and see how it goes. I have a lot of problems with Login sometimes on that site. While I can learn to do this stuff, I inevitably make mistakes in the beginning. When only I am involved, I don't mind. I hesitate to take responsibility for others unless I am competent in something. But, I will try to attend. Hopefully some others will see that they have the time. And you are right, Alice. If many volunteer, it will be less work for the individual people. Ok! Who has been wanting to be moderator, but just too shy to volunteer? Who needs to expand her/his horizon? Learn something new? Make friends and influence people? Step right up, this offer for a limited time only. If you call in the next 10 minutes, we will let you be 2 moderators! Our 800 number has qualified operators to take your information and get you started on a life enhancing experience! Become a moderator and lose 20 " inches in just 4 weeks. hmmmmm Hope my humor isn't too silly for you all. ) Sunny ) > Sunny, > > You don't need to have any technical knowledge. Guest guest
I find that chats overwhelm my brain and quickly exhaust me. I have the same problem talking on the phone. It is a problem with not enough energy to make my brain function properly. I have a hard enough time just with regular email and such. It may be that people who are participating in the chats have somewhat the same problem and the idea of being a moderator is a bit more than many can handle. Just a thought. Lea Doing Your Part I have to say that I was disappointed yesterday when I sent the message to this group and to the Mito group requesting assistance with moderating the MDA Chats. Out of two groups with over 1000 total memberships, I received 1 answer for a volunteer. Unfortunately, this is not enough. The MDA requires moderators for their chats thus this may be a signal to me to end those Monday night chats. I personally am not able to be a regular chat host. Cindy has family responsibilities on Monday nights. Laurie and Kristie have been handling the job pretty much every week. The lack of response tells me that there isn't enough interest in the chat to keep it going. If I am unable to find at least 2 more volunteers, I am going to request that the Mito chat on the MDA site is dissolved. Alice Medical advice, information, opinions, data and statements contained herein are not necessarily those of the list moderators. The author of this e mail is entirely responsible for its content. List members are reminded of their responsibility to evaluate the content of the postings and consult with their physicians regarding changes in their own treatment. Personal attacks are not permitted on the list and anyone who sends one is automatically moderated or removed depending on the severity of the attack. Guest guest
As a moderator, I have to say it is an easy job. Right now, there are several very consistent participants who are good about welcoming new people and things just take care of themselves these days. We need to be there in case of problems, but that has not been necessary. We have the guest nights well organized and 4 people can handle those. While begging for help, I am still looking for someone to take over the chore of handling the mitoldie silent auction at the conference. I am willing to help you get started and it doesn't involve going out to find items for the auction. I am keeping busy making things and a request on the list usually produces some nice items. I just need a break. I will have to let the conference committee know if we need tables again this year. If no one volunteers, I will have to tell them " no " . We make almost $400 to donate to UMDF. Having a team that works together would be a real plus. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Thu, 03 Mar 2005 14:14:05 -0000 > To: > Subject: Re: Doing Your Part > > > > Sunny, > > You don't need to have any technical knowledge. Guest guest
I have to say I might have volunteered, but my cognitive issues make it difficult to make extra commitments that " tax the brain " , especially at night. I think if I had the time and energy to be in the chats to start with, maybe I would think differently. IMHO, it seems like weekly commitments could be too much (or are they monthly?). Does the moderator have to be a MDA patient, or could a friend or family member do it? Thanks, RH > > I find that chats overwhelm my brain and quickly exhaust me. Guest guest
Me too! I guess my message today made me sound desperate. We have plenty of volunteers now and should be able to divide the responsibilities of moderation very nicely. The next step belongs to the MDA. Thanks Everyone! Guest guest
Hi Alice I'm willing to help moderate the chat. Is it preferable to have a high-speed connection? Steve D.
