Guest guest
I took Livi to Dr. Mosca today to get a 2nd opinion...Dr. Schmale had been talking surgery to open up Olivia's ankle capsule and I was questioning this action. Dr. Mosca was very nice and smart, but ultimately agreed with Dr. Schmale - he took the time to explain the technical side of things, which I really appreciated. He had wonderful things to say about the Ponseti method, but he said that we were at a point where the method would not necessarily help her - he said 95% of kids have no problems, but Olivia's achilles tendons are very tight on both feet, and it may be more than the tendon that is causing the tightness. He said they would not mess with anything else in her feet, just the back. Olivia has also been kicking out of her left shoe (the worse foot) at night, all the time. He suggested that we change the degree of rotation on the bar to 60 degrees to see if it helps keep them on - that way she'll stay in them but won't lose any more of the progress she's made in the other parts of her correction. So we go back to Schmale in a month and he will probably talk to us about scheduling the surgery. I guess they won't open the capsule unless once they get in there, they find it's necessary. I'm feeling better about it after talking to him and getting a second opinion from a known doc....but it obviously wasn't what I wanted to hear.
