I am having this problem right now. You think it's fibro? I was

thinking it's from the post partum of having Cheyenne, but that was

almost a year ago. Would I still be losing hair? Jimi

How about those hair pieces that are so in right now that add extra hair to a

comb piece? If you got small ones that might not be too much extra weight. Or

how about a light, but large floppy hat? They're in fashion right now too. You

might want to have your doctor double check your thyroid too.

When I was first diagnosed with Graves, and before RAI or any drugs at all,

my hair became noticeably thinner. My endo said it was a symptom of Graves.

It's a hormone thing I think.

Happens quite often with sudden changes in hormone levels (Some people

get it with hypothyroidism as well but I think that is slightly different).

Never seen a technical medical explanation that made sense.

It grows back if it is just the " usual " hair loss.

Although hair growth rate is pretty directly related to thyroid hormone

levels, I always had to shave daily when I was hyper (now sometimes I

can't be bothered to shave even when I need to - Faye isn't keen on beards).

I've escaped hair symptoms, maybe the hairloss is more a women thing? I

lost a lot of eyelashes at one point, everyone told me I was making a

lot of fuss over getting a few eyelashes in my eyes, didn't realise it

was a thyroid thing.

Hi ,

Its most likely related to the TAP he put you on last week. When I

first started my PTU my hair was comming out in clumps. Once I was

balanced it doesn't come out at all anymore.

Hope this helps.

Also I forgot to ask you if your on TAP does your doc think you have

Graves without doing any testing? This is strange. I mean how would

he know and why would you be on TAP if you haven't been tested for

Graves?

Thanks Simone, the sudden change in hormone levels makes sense to me, I

seem to recall hair loss like this with my 2 pregnancies and of course the

hormones are all over the map then too. I'm apalled in the morning when I

shower how much hair is falling out :( What a drag. I hope it stabilizes

soon.

Thanks,

BC Canada

Hello everone, I have been experiencing an abnormal amount of hair loss for

about two weeks now. I have MELAS, just wondering if anyone else has ever had

this symptom related to Mito?

Thanks

LOL I thought of that, also thought of Thyroid. I looked up selinium rich

foods the only one I eat a steady diet of is whole wheat bread, the rest are

eaten but not every day. Anothere inigma in the MITO disease world

her they are top ten selenium-rich foods

potato, baked with skin, 7 oz (903 µg)

tuna, light, water packed, 3 oz (69 µg)

pork loin, roasted, 3 oz (32 µg)

egg, 1 (31 µg)

sunflower seed kernels, roasted, 1 oz (22 µg)

top sirloin, lean, broiled, 3 oz (28 µg)

turkey breast, 3 oz (27 µg)

wheat germ, 1/4 cup (23 µg)

chicken breast, roasted, 3 oz (22 µg)

whole wheat bread, 1 slice (10 µg)

cashews, roasted, 1 oz (3 µg)

Have you changed your selenium intake lately either by supplement or

food intact? That can effect hair growth/loss.

That I am not sure of, but both too much or not enough can cause problems.

Have you been ill or under stress? My hair tends to fall out more when I am

sick or not sleeping enough.

Also, our cat was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago. For months her

hair was falling out and she was loosing weight. The vet said that stress

physical or mental can make cats hair fall out.

I don't know how old you are, but might it be from a change in hormone

levels?

My head hair thinned and I lost all the hair on my body when off the

supplements before a muscle biopsy about 5 years ago. I think that I

may have been taking too much selenium, but now I'm not sure. Since I

stopped working and can better pace myself, I now have hair on my arms

and legs like normal. My doctor thought it might be hormone related

(cortosol), but the labs have come back normal. My own take on it is

that there is energy to now grow it.

I also loose hair when my thyroid replacement is too low. Because of

my impaired metabolism, I have to take more than is normal. Have you

had your thyroid checked?

I hope you find some answers.

thanks for the input, it has been a sudden hair loss over the past 2-3 weeks.

I am going to my internist next week, I am sure he will do some blood work

and refer me. An endocrinologist is a good thought, I was thinking on the lines

of a dermatologist.Until then I will use plenty of draino after I wash my

hair (LOL).

Has it been " sudden " (over only a few months), or steadily increasing

hair loss over years? If you think it might be sudden, I'd suggest an

endocrinologist to look into thyroid or other problems.

I've had thin hair all my life, and had tended to lose a lot just from

brushing or combing. I am on methyl sulfonyl methane for joint pain,

and my 80-year-old godmother is on it as well. She told me that she's

had more color in her hair lately (not from a bottle, LOL). She never

went 100% grey, but now has red returning to her hair. I've also found

that I have a lot of shorter hairs (2 or 3 inches long) around the

front of my hair, which is unusual, since I haven't had any layers or

bangs cut for five years. If you try methyl sulfonyl methane (usually

called MSM in the health food stores), make sure it has molybdenum in

it (Source Naturals brand does), as extra sulfur can deplete it. I've

found the MSM supplement does wonders for my joint pain as well, and is

extremely safe. IMHO, I'm not a medical doctor, etc.

Take care,

Here's my PS on hair loss. I've lost almost all the hair on my body except

on my head! All came off in a 6 month period a couple of years ago and has

never grown back. I was very sick at the time and figure it was due to one

of many metabolic imbalances. Have never mentioned it to a doctor, but I'm

sure it's a clue. I do have a permanent bald spot on my head the size of a

silver dollar, but that's from radiation for the meningioma. Thank goodness

no larger! I can cover it if I keep my hair long enough.
