Guest guest
Hello, everyone. I am hoping that someone out there would have some advice for us. We are working with a 4 year old Mexican child who has severe speech delays. She has been enrolled in her school district's special education program for two years and receives weekly speech therapy (in English). I am in the process of arranging a second opinion through a private speech and hearing center but they are trying to give me the run-around that because of the language barrier, any evaluation that they would do would probably not be accurate. I told them that the family has health insurance and we would be willing to assist them in traveling if necessary to find a bilingual speech therapist, at least for an evaluation. The family lives in southwest Virginia so we could travel to Tennessee, Charlottesville (VA) or anywhere within a reasonable distance. My questions are: 1) is anyone familiar with a bilingual evaluation instrument that we could recommend to the local therapist? 2) does anyone know of any studies or info about providing speech therapy in a language other than your primary language? 3) does anyone know of a bilingual speech therapist in the southeast US or someone that we could have consult via telephone with the local therapist? Thank you in advance for any advice. Bell Boltwood, RN email: marybell@...
