Guest guest
This is what I learned through my grandparents and as a nurse. A living will can be obtained at most doctor's offices, all hospitals and some can even be printed from your computer. In very nice simple terms they state you are of sound mind and when your time to die approaches you want no heroics, no mechanical intervention, you want nature to take its course. It also allows you to say I want to be pain free but die with dignity that all mankind deserves. It can be witnessed by two strangers after you state your wishes...you cannot get a living will for someone else it must be their desire. I NEVER went and asked a visitor to witness the signing of a living will and had them refuse...most said I have one too! Hospital employees CANNOT sign them. A Power of Attorney needs to be a LEGAL document written for YOUR specific needs and desires. A Medical PoA is for medical care only...a Durable CAN cover both areas IF it is specified. Example:I had a durable PoA for my grandparents and ONE sentence in it stated I could have access to deeds, restrictions and warrantees...that sentence allowed me into their safety deposit box! That is where all the insurance papers and their will was. My mother was their only child and she died 10 years before my grandfather so having her on the signature card didn't matter. The durable PoA also stated, if I am in need of medical care OF ANY SORT I leave all decisions up to my granddaughter and her judgement. In 1987 when we made this decision it cost $50 to get two of these and then the notary fee when they were signed. A Power of Attorney needs to be someone you really trust because they can legally sell your home, trade your investments...rip you off completely! Nothing makes rats come out of the woodwork faster than money!!! Debra
