Guest guest
I think that many people expect special needs kids to get potty trained way too early. I read that most Special kids don't potty train until between 4 and 5 and that certainly has been my experience. I was very frustrated but what could I do? He just didn't get it. Ian finally trained at 4 1/2 and he isn't even autistic, just, supposedly speech delayed. , who is very low functioning is 5 1/2 now and has no clue about using the potty. rather than get all stressed out about it, I just keep him in diapers. Sure, I'd like him to use the potty but he may never. I think too many of us bow to pressure form the rest of the community. Just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Hi! Sorry, I'm not going to be much help with finding a resource, but at least I'll offer moral support. I have a son the same age, and was getting worried... until I talked to a friend who has an Asperger's child too. He was 8yrs. old when he was day-time trained and he's still in pull-ups at night (aged 9) now. My son can't tell the difference between wet pants and dry pants. Sometimes he'll be soaking and say, " I'm dry! " Needless to say, he's back in diapers. He also has sensory problems and I seriously doubt that he has the ability to sense when he needs to go. So, I wouldn't worry so much. It'll happen eventually. potty training? Forwarding this question for an off-list friend, please reply to her directly, thanks! -BJ " Is there anyone who has found a book or resource that is valuable to help with potty training? We are having " catch " success, but no self initiated success. is 3 1/3 years, PDD, and ADHD. He is still in pullups due to the frequency of misses and the fact that he is in school. We've tried regular undies (didn't matter), undies with pullups (didn't matter) and now just pullups (doesn't matter). ONly thing that works is catching it on a regular schedule. If we travel and miss a time, it is a real hit or miss as to whether he's wet or dry. Please respond to me directly at ricklynn@... . Thanks.
