Guest guest
Has anyone in the group used voice-activated software? We are looking at several packages but will probably end up with Dragon Naturally Speaking, the Professional version. Hoping this technology will allow me to do more writing. Thanks. Guest guest
Barbara, Dragon Naturally Speaking is probably the best technology as far as voice activation but this technology has a long way to go. Only one person can really use it as it seems to get confused by different pitches. You will have to work with it a while to get it to do what you want but it should eventually, with patience. I use a voice activation programmed phone called CapTel. It's not voice activated on my end but it is for the relay operator. Each operator has their own program and they voice into the relay what the caller is saying. Some of the things that print on the screen are really funny and rather strange but the operator has the option to correct it by typing in <>. It's expensive but an amazing technolgy. Cindy is considering it for Branden so that he can keep up with his classmates in school. He only has one hand with three fingers so as his work gets more complicated, he very well could fall behind because he can't keep up physically. It's a very good option for him. Guest guest
Alice, Thanks for the response. I'm glad to know that you also recommend Dragon Naturally Speaking. My husband is a programmer and keeps up with software so he has told me a lot about this particular technology. He just hasn't used it personally. I am a bit suspicious of the hype about how easy it is to " train. " I also wonder about the accuracy claims. My doctor knows I am a writer and has encouraged me for years to try speech-activated software because I just can't type for any length of time. However, I have problems speaking for any length of time too. The speech muscles give out quickly and go into spasm. It sounds like I'm strangling if I try to keep talking, which would thoroughly confuse the software. My doctor's idea was that if I could alternate between speaking and typing, I could get more done, and this is probably true. We have been waiting for the technology to improve enough that it would be more useful than frustrating. Just not sure if it is at that stage yet. I can see how it would be useful for . Hope it works out for him. Thanks again for sharing your experience. We may just take the big plunge and try it.
