Guest guest
I take NIASPAN 1000MG 1 tablet twice a day....it is prescription. My endocronologist first suggested it for my heart. My neuro/opthomologist who diagnosed me with MELAS had prescribed Niacin for me first upon Dr. Shoffner's suggestion. Both forms of niacin can give you headaches and cause flushing so my endo suggested taking aspirin with it which takes care of that.
Guest guest
I am not currently seeing him but his name is Dr. Kattah he is at Chicago University. When I saw him he was at town but he moved on a few years back. As I said, he diagnosed me 12 years ago. Dr. Shoffner at Emory confirmed the dx through muscle biopsy. Guest guest
You are not concerned about taking aspirin every day? My neuro recommended that I take it every day, but I'm avoiding it because I already have ulcers. I know some people have problems with niacin, so one should be careful to start it. My dad gets a bad rash on his hands when he takes too many B vitamins. That's why I use flax seed, which has a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, although I once was using salmon oil capsules. I think the trick is to treat any supplement to treat high cholesterol as you would a prescription drug - take it everyday at the same times, and don't miss it, then repeat a cholesterol test. They have OTC cholesterol tests available, may be cheaper than a lab test. Take care, RH > I take NIASPAN 1000MG 1 tablet twice a day....it is prescription. Guest guest
I am highly allergic to niacin which is unfortunate because it's a good medicine for high triglycerides which the cholesterol problem I have. All other cholesterol testing is excellent and my total cholesterol is very much in the normal range but my triglycerides are still high. I have had to rush to the ER from my reaction to niacin which a doctor gave me by mistake once. My skin begins to draw tight and it reaches the point where I cannot move my lips. Some people flush. I turn dark purple. I scared all my coworkers to death who wanted to call 911 but I drove myself. Too bad too because it's good for relieving tinnitus as well. BTW - I do know that Dr Shoffner recommends Niacin with the mito cocktail. Weird - huh? Alice
