Guest guest
- We are in the process of healing a leaky gut and there is no doubt in my mind that it is working but it will take a lot of time. We had a massive yeast overgrowth that was exacerbated by food allergies. Last summer, we eliminated the yeast with Diflucan over several weeks and now are on a limited diet trying to get the allergies under control. We are working with a pediatric GI who is familiar with the autism-gut connection and he has been an enormous help in identifying foods that need eliminating and helping introduce new ones. The blood allergy tests, in particular, were very helpful. I read a story in Living Without magazine a few months ago about a parent who over many years completely healed her children (non-autistic) of their food allergies - they are now adults who can eat anything but as children they virtually lived on sweet potatoes and venison because they reacted severely to eating anything else. My perspective is that now we have a child (PDD-NOS) who is only autistic whereas before we had a child who was miserably sick AND autistic. Treating and coping with the autism is infinitely easier now that he can manage his body. We still have a long way to go in getting him to try more new foods but it's clear that he can tolerate (not get ill and cry for hours) a transgression in some areas (like a little apple juice). Yes, they heal, but it takes a lot of time. It doesn't take a way the autism but it does make it easier to deal with. Keep at it and good luck. We are treating my son for yeast in the traditional ways...Nystatin, low sugar/yeast diet, culturelle supplements. I have always felt this was the root of my son's problem and that various vaccine and anitbiotic assaults pushed him over the edge, so to speak. I do believe that once we have this biological problem under control, the rest will follow. That is not to say we aren't doing 12 hours per week of therapy with him, etc. Now for the questions...has anyone ever really healed a leaky gut? How long would this yeast battle take to resolve or is it now a life long fight? My twins came home from the hospital loaded with yeast...I just didn't know that had it because he didn't present with thrush like his brother...just a nasty burn on his groin from his urine that our dear doctor told us was just a " Ph " problem that would go away. ::sigh:: Any help that anyone can send my way regarding yeast would be most appreciated.
