Checking In After Surgery One Month Ago

Hi Everyone:

I had surgery on May 18 and was in the hospital in Santa

California for 3 and one-half weeks. My colon was resected (one

tumor); one third of my liver was removed (one tumor); and my gall

bladder and appendix (cancerous also) were removed. I was released

one week after surgery but was home for less than 24 hours before

nearly passing out in pain. I went via ambulance back to the

hospital where they discovered an abscess on the liver. I have had

fluid in the lungs (one partially collapsed), and catheters in my

liver. I recently came home (with one return admission last Friday

due to infection) and I have one catheter in my liver draining fluid

from the site of the incision. I received a call today that a

culture taken of the fluid last Friday while in the hospital revealed

a highly resistant form of bacteria which needs to be treated now

with linezolid (also known as Zyvox). The cost is $80 per tablet

which has to be taken 2 times a day for 2 weeks. I am hoping this

will clear up the infection.

This has been the most horrific experience of my life. I have almost

no memory of the first 2 weeks in the hospital during which I

hallucinated alot. I have been on a roller coaster since returning

home but the love of my wonderful sons (ages 11 and 10) and knowing

how much they need me will keep me going. I need to get strong so

that I can begin chemo asap. I will be taking Oxaliplatin, 5 FU, and

Avastin (my oncologist was the primary investigator who got Avastin

approved by the FDA last year). I would love to hear from any of you

who are on a similar course of treatment to know how you are doing.

Love to you all.

Hi

So glad you are back with us. You have been through a terrible ordeal,

and LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT.. Hoorah!!!!

Well hope that the strong anitbiotic will do it's job on that bacteria,

and the chemo does its work on the cancer.

We are happy that you have come back and hope you will keep us informed.

We are here for you in every way.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and your lovely children as

well. I am sure this has been a traumatic experience for them as well.

Take care and God Bless Jolene

, So sorry about the bumpy road you have been on. Yes, your

children needing you will give you the strength to fight this. You

are on the road to recovery and you need to stay postive. Fight this
