It has been awhile since I posted but my dad had a doctor's

appointment in Omaha and everything appears to be stable for now.

He got another doctor in TOpeka, as the one currently treating him

didn't seem to be able to work with the primary in Omaha. So things

are looking better. But my dad's Omaha doctor is particpating in

the Tour of Hope.

http://www.tourofhope.com/team/2005_riders/silberstein.htm

This made me feel great about his commitment and such. It is just

simply one of those feel good stories.

For those of you that are new around here is a copy of a post I made

about a month back:

21784:

FOr those of you that don't remember me here is some background

July 29, 2004

Well after a 5 week break from chemo, a trip to Tulsa for a week,

and a week long vacation camping on Colorado we came home to a

waiting CT scan result and a Dr. appointment in Omaha.

For those of you that are new or may not remember -- my dad was Dx

Stage IV colon cancer a year ago and has been on two different chemo

regimes. The first one was Oxiplaitin -- 9 months significant

shrinkage -- he couldn't stand the numb feeling in our rough Kansas

winters so switch to FolFiri with Avastin -- no shrinkage but no

growth either. His CEA vary some but overall have always been very

low. The highest was around 20.0 before surgery to remove tumor at

the very beignning of this. His cancer has spread to his liver.

About 1 1/2 months ago his Dr. in TOpeka had suggested that he may

need to stop the chemo and really evaluate what he wanted to do.

Well we made an appoint as we do every 6 weeks to see our Omaha dr.

and he said he was unsure as to why he thought my Dad should stop.

So this is what is going on now. Dad took a 20% reduced dose in

chemo to hopefully keep his white counts from dropping dangerously

low and then for the next 3 or 4 treatments he will only recieve

Avastin. Then we will redo the CT scans and see what to do. My dad

has continued to work throughout the entire ordeal, high school

mathematics teacher, really only missing so he could take a

treatment every two weeks on a Friday. Thanks for all the prayers

when I needed them and I just wanted to say thanks for all the

enouragement and support.

Kristi

Back to the present. -- Dad did take the reduced dose until about 3

months ago. Then his blood work, not CT scans, showed some

indication of growth. The dr. in Omaha suggested going back on the

orginally chemo FolFox (Oxiplatin) with Avastin as he was already

using for another 6 months. Again CT is not showing growth -- but

blood work is suspicous.

Thanks for reading this lengthy book. I hope to catch up on some of

the familiar names and hope everyone else is hanging in there.

Present Day: Dad is currently on a treatment and we are on month

shy of the 2 year survivor mark!!!!!!!!!! GO dad!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I have read Phil's story. The reason nothing is done like that

with my dad's is because of the multiple tumors. Dad's cancer was

very advanced before it was even found. We have had a couple of

different opinions from doctors and even a liver surg. who feels

like they would not beable to leave dad with enough healthy liver

for him to function. Since he feels fine now and is doing great he

will stay on the same course of treatment.
