Guest guest
My best friend was diagnosed last week with colon cancer. She and her husband live in Idaho, are self-employed, have no health insurance, and no money to cover any of the treatment. Today she is going to the hospital where the surgery will be performed to find out what her financial options are. I'm concerned that she may not get a complete answer - not out of any disregard for her well-being, but these folks may not know about federal programs, grants, etc. I know that in Washington state (where I live) Medicare is available to uninsured, even if you are under-age. My friend is 62. Do any of you have any ideas? Thank you, Debbie in Seattle

Karina, I am so greatful to get responses here, you have no idea (or probably you do). When you feel like telling me more, I'd really like to know - good news or bad. I feel so helpless in this whole ordeal of hers but this is the one thing I think I can help her with. I'm a CPA and work for a few nonprofits so I'm not afraid of going to bat for her and doing the legwork. She is the kindest, most selfless person I know and feels uncomfortable asking anyone for financial help. I, on the other hand, know that there must be some social support network that she can tap into. Thanks so much, Debbie
