Guest guest
I have never heard of D&C's being a risk to fertility, on the contrary, they were usually used as a way of cleaning things up inside so that you *could* conceive. I have had 3 miscarriages and several D&C's, including one right after my second birth when the placenta was retained. Ruthie

It means more bleeding afterwards (read: torrential) but at least you have peace of mind. it sounds like the hospital are covering their backs. Guest guest
It's not the D&C per se that is a risk to fertility. Any procedure which breeches the cervix (including childbirth) can introduce the risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Caught in its early stages, PID is fairly straightforward to clear with oral flagyl and penicillin/erythromycin (from memory - somebody medical please correct me!) I got PID when DD1 was born, but didn't know I had it until the day after her first birthday when I was literally felled by crippling low pain. It took two laparoscopies, some IV antibiotics, and lots of oral antibiotics and 6 weeks bed rest before I was well enough to resume normal life! I was then told that my tubes had become so scarred that it was highly unlikely I would ever conceive again. Obviously, they were wrong in my case, but it's not a pleasant condition. However, I would not refuse a D&C post-partum to clear retained products - having also suffered that post DS, it's also unpleasant. I don't know how large the risks of PID from D&C are - but I've had 3 D&Cs and PID only once... It's getting less common to do them, though sometimes it is necessary. -- jennifer@... Vaudin
