The 'First Aider at Work' course that I did (with Red Cross) does cover the

basics that you want.

Don't know if it's any different to other First Aid courses but I would

imagine they pretty much the same, just change the title to apply to your

situation. I suppose Parent's First Aid would have extra stuff on how to

deal with babies, obviously.

I did mine at work, so didn't have to pay. It was four days (over four

weeks) with an 'exam' at the end - someone asked us questions and also a

'situation' where you have to resuscitate the dummy. I think you get

graded. You also get a certficate which is valid for 3 years and you're

qualified to deal with any situation which requires First Aid. After 3

years you need to do a 'Refresher Course' of only 2 days.

Janet,

Yes but I specifically want to know how to resucitate a baby and a child, and

its supposed to be much different to adults, so the Red Cross course isnt

quite what I want.

Suppose it would still be useful though, might ask when go back to work.

Thanks,

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) do a course " How to save a

child's life " - it sounds just what you need. It is a 2 hours session

and it covers, drowning, choking and rescussitation, IIRC.

I've done the course twice - once when it was run on a Sat morning as

part of the local adult education - cost about £5. The second time

was as a result of the first. We got the local branch of the RLSS to

run a session for our NCT branch, so we had two of their trainers come

to a local hall one evening. At the time they didn't charge (they are

a charity and it is classed as part of their primary purpose

activities), but we charged members £3.50 which covered hall cost and

approx £2.50 per head donation to the RLSS. As I understand the RLSS

now charge approx £5 to cover cost of materials (glossy handouts you

take away).

I found it very informative both times (different tutors) and very

hands on. We had one " baby " (dummy not real!)to rescussitate between

two people, so lots of practice, and also a " Junior " we could practise

on for older children.

Their HQ phone no. is 01789 773994 if you want to find the phone no of

your local branch

I teach baby resucitation for my branch and it is different for babies and

small children to adults. This is because in an adult the primary event is

likely to have been the heart stopping, whereas in a baby the primary event

is likely to have been stopping breathing - for what reason we may never

know...

Do your health visitors teach it - all should be able to - and does your

health authority run anything for parents - your health visitor would know

so that might be your first best bet.

I can run through the ABC... here but that won't be the same as having a go

yourself - or we could have an egroup coffee with baby resucitation

training thrown in here if you all fancy it...
