Sounds likely, I am somewhat skeptical of the lab range validities on most thyroid tests, most healthy thyroid results for fT4 are well under 17 pmol/L, let alone 24. However it is quite unusual to have a TSH in range, and so close to normal with raised fT4, especially with Graves' (which is just the most common form of hyperthyroidism). So I think they should be alert to other causes of hyperthyroidism, many of these may well show up on a scan. Not sure what advice you are seeking, it sounds like the doctors are taking it seriously. There are additional blood tests that can be done, antibody tests to rule out an autoimmune cause, and free T3 might also be useful to better understand what is going on, indeed there are almost too many blood tests, the hardest thing is knowing which aren't worth bothering with. Getting the NHS to do a full thyroid panel TSH, fT4 and fT3 can be surprisingly difficult. When do you expect the scan results? Guest guest
Hi . Since you had thyroid cancer you probably have a healthy respect for radiation. I'm so glad to hear you're doing well. Thyroid cancer is extremely highly treatable. I have a friend who went through this last summer and is doing well but I will still pass onto her your good news as I'm sure it will be encouraging. It's not surprising to hear you went hypo, just feel for you that it had to get terrible first. Just for your own sake read up about T3; it might come in handy somewhere down the road. (I think it was the book Thyroid Power by the Shameses that clarified it for me. Can't recommend the book as I'm not knowledgeable enough on hypoT but I heard it's good.) Radioactive iodine for hyperT isn't likely to ever again be relevant for you but if you've become " the thyroid expert " among your friends and family then it's good you stopped by for solid advice - Terry steered you well towards the top 20 list. About your eyes - you came to the right place too since there are unfortunately others here in the same boat as you. Good luck finding the right medical help and hope all goes well with your TED (thyroid eye disease). Take care, Fay P.S. I just had a delayed reaction; good job my phone is down so I couldn't hit send right away. , did you not have a total thyroidectomy? I thought that was SOP for thyroid cancer. How was there anything left for Graves to develop? RAI is clearly contraindicated when TED presents itself. A dr. who would recommend RAI under those circumstances is clearly suspect. P.P.S. You only see your endo once a year? What are routine tests? They should be TSH, FREE T4 AND FREE T3. (Pardon the caps but you can't hear my voice get emphatic ;-) ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
