They are transformed to inorganic mercury in the body. It is the inorganic that is toxic and that causes the damage. DMSA chelates inorganic. I'm not sure if it chelates organic (probably, I don't see why not) - but it doesn't matter because the organic isn't toxic and it is converted to the toxic inorganic in the human body.
