Guest guest
Sorry, that's not impressive, that's foolhardy (or don't they have gas mains in Jerusalem?) and also a sad indictment of the fact that appalling violence is the norm. Nothing to be proud of. Anneliese who knows what it means to be a soft target. Letter from Jerusalem... Friday What impresses me is the resilience of this city. Remember the Ealing car bomb, the Staples Corner bomb... the roads were closed for days, weeks even months afterwards and the area became a ghost town; no one daring to venture near. In Jerusalem, a suicide bomber blows himself and 15 others up in a central Pizza parlour, and within *three hours* the roads are open again, and the people are back. I don't think Israel does have mains gas supplies now you come to mention it. When we installed central heating it had to be oil, our cooker is all electric, and I seem to remember having gas canisters for a previously rented flat that had a gas hob. So for whatever reason, I don't think Israel is foolhardy. Just realistically resigned to how things are. Violence *is* the norm, has always been the norm since the birth of the state; which I agree is very sad. Why else would every 18 yr old, male and female alike, be drafted into compulsory army service? I do realise that my original post sounded boastful of Israel and condemning of the British system, and I apologise for that ( Ruthie (who seems to be putting her foot in it left right and centre right now )
