Guest guest
Are masks effective, particularly when in or around large numbers of people, such as grocery stores? Jack79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine To: Breathe-Support Sent: Monday, April 27, 2009 8:51:58 AMSubject: "Swine" flu Hi everybody, Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it is so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with compromised respiratory systems. From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain of flu from which no one has immunity. So far there has not been serious illness in the US from this flu but it's very very early yet. It is being spread from person to person, not from contact with animals. The precautions to take are the things that all of us already do. Wash your hands frequently, stay away from those with obvious illness. Right now it might not be a bad idea to stay away from large gatherings. For those of us (like me) who are on immune suppressants all those things go double. If you begin to feel ill, run a fever etc, don't take chances. Get to the doctor. There are two anti-viral drugs (Tamiflu and Relenza) that they say are effective against the virus but you have to take them early in the course of the illness, the first 48 hours or so. So don't waste time, call the doctor. Anyone else have any ideas to help us all through this? Guest guest
Jack You're certainly better with masks than without. They are largely effective. However, avoidance is still better. Mask must be fit well and air tight. Then your hands become your biggest exposure. Everything you touch. I am germ obsessive and hate doctor's buildings and pharmacies. I wear gloves to the drive up window at Walgreens as you know every button, every pen, everything there has had thousands of sick people touching it. I do keep masks and wear them when I feel a large chance of exposure. > > Are masks effective, particularly when in or around large numbers of people, such as grocery stores? > Jack > 79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine > > > > > ________________________________ > From: Beth mbmurtha@... > To: Breathe-Support > Sent: Monday, April 27, 2009 8:51:58 AM > Subject: " Swine " flu > > > > > > Hi everybody, > Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it is so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with compromised respiratory systems. > From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain of flu from which no one has immunity. Guest guest
Jack, They can be effective if used properly....that is covering the nose and mouth and discarded after a single use. That said, I don't know whether that level of precaution is called for yet. I've seen them on the news in use in Mexico at the moment but the situation in Mexico is clearly much more serious with the number of deaths that they've had. Unfortunately it's going to take some time to see which way this outbreak goes. It could become more serious or it could fizzle. Time will tell. Guest guest
Thanks MB and Bruce for your comments. I hope it fizzles, but I want to be prepared if it doesn't It has been rare for me to have flue, perhaps only a couple of times in my long life. I remember one of my daughters bringing me soup. In fact, my illnesses, other than IPF, I can count on one finger. I think maybe because I full of that Texas BS. Guest guest
Jack/MB It's of great concern here due to the number of people going back and forth constantly. I'm definitely going to avoid large crowds and any places I can. > > Jack, > They can be effective if used properly....that is covering the nose and mouth and discarded after a single use. > That said, I don't know whether that level of precaution is called for yet. Guest guest
My husband went out today and got in a supply of food and we have things in freezer. We could hold out nearly a month if we had to without going out. It does sound drastic but most will eventually use the beans, pasta etc that you would need. If he gets it then I'm at risk so we all must be careful. Looks like it may be escalating enough for compromised people to take seriously. About the mask, it depends on the size of the particle it will filter. Some virus are very tiny others not. Dr. Gupta said today you would need the very smallest filtering mask made to do much good. Still boils down to avoidance and first rate hand washing (not touching your face)and other simple measures. ann > > > > > > Jack, > > > They can be effective if used properly....that is covering the nose > > and mouth and discarded after a single use. > > > That said, I don't know whether that level of precaution is called > for > > yet. Guest guest
OK can't resist .. have to join this thread... MY FRIEND the Senior Infection Control Sister for all the Hospitals in our North Coast area SAID.... a HIGH quality, small weave LINEN hankerchief is THE BEST protection against sneezy, coughy, coldy, fluey BUGS ........PLUS........ Hand Wash Wipes use to wipe down the handles/taps..... on everything PUBLIC that you can't avoid touching... Hold the Hanky over your nose or buy a HUGE one & make an old fashioned Cowboy Mask job! Just like hey! She reckons masks are almost useless because they get damp from our breathing very quickly & bugs can pass through the membranes too easily especially once they're damp.. Masks make people feel more secure but can't in all reality give you protection. For a mask to be an effective barrier you'd suffocate! So everyone send out forsome old fashioned hankies! Guest guest
GIO Good information but then why do doctors and others wear masks in surgery? I just found a site that said similar to what you said and then another that said they were of benefit up to an hour or so, but then of no benefit. One site talked about everyone wearing them to protect against Sars and not working. You've sure mucked the waters from your down under backward toilet flowing world. Now, I'm totally confused on the whole subject. > > > > > > Are masks effective, particularly when in or around large numbers of > > people, such as grocery stores? > > > Jack > > > 79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > From: Beth mbmurtha@ > > > To: Breathe-Support > > > Sent: Monday, April 27, 2009 8:51:58 AM > > > Subject: " Swine " flu > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everybody, > > > Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it is > > so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with > > compromised respiratory systems. > > > From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain of > > flu from which no one has immunity. Guest guest
GIO More on masks. Now, here's the best and latest I could find. The viruses if airborne can pass through them. However, they are spread by " large-droplet secretions " -- by sneezes or coughs -- usually in a 3-foot radius of the person, and they drop out of the air quickly. So thats why medical professionals wear them and why they may or may not be of benefit to us in these situations. For obvious reasons, this is a very popular topic today. > > > > > > > > Are masks effective, particularly when in or around large numbers > of > > > people, such as grocery stores? > > > > Jack > > > > 79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > > From: Beth mbmurtha@ > > > > To: Breathe-Support > > > > Sent: Monday, April 27, 2009 8:51:58 AM > > > > Subject: " Swine " flu > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everybody, > > > > Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it > is > > > so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with > > > compromised respiratory systems. > > > > From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain > of > > > flu from which no one has immunity. Guest guest
According to my Mate....... 'cos it makes the Surgeons feel like they're doing something to stop the spread of germs (as much from them as for any other reason) My Infection Control Sister has the worst time getting the Surgeons to submit to their nasal passages being routinely swabbed to test them for all the germs THEY carry & pass onto the wounds of patients during surgery.. their Masks don't stop the tranasmission of these bugs unless it's super-fast surgery (which it rarely ever is!) The solution to surgery bugs is to get the Surgeons treated promptly for whatever bugs they are carrying up theri noses & in their upper respiratory airways... now you know THAT you'll have a whole lot of MORE ????? to ask your surgeon BEFORE you let him anywhere near you with a scalpel! Remember it was the Doctors who passed on the bugs that killed oodles of women after childbirth in Hospitals .......'cos back then they didn't even bother washing their hands between patients. Apparently they still have to be Hog-whipped into maintaining vigilence on THAT score... they get complacent & forget what its all about! My poor friend gets herself into ALL sorts of strife running around checking up on 'em all!
Guest guest
Now my first reply to this particular discussion hasn't appeared .. it's now some hours later so I guess the Web Gremlins 'got it'.... According to my ICSF (Infection Control Sister Friend)... Surgeons wear Masks more in HOPE than for any practical use...they want to do the right thing.... mind you she says she always has a tough time getting them to allow her to regularly swab their nasal passages for the BUGS that cause most post-operative wound infections... the most effective way to stop those infections is to monitor & treat the Surgeons .... She also makes herself unpopular by doing spot checks on their routine hand washing regimes ( & the hursing staff as well)..... complacency is the culprit... remember all those women who died of pueperal fever after Childbirth when Birthing in Maternity Hospitals first became the norm.... it was the Doctors spreading germs by never washing their hands between patients... they were ignorant of how bacterial infections were spread...today ignorance is no cover BUT it still happens! Now you know you should be brave enough to ask your surgeons for their post-operative infection rates.....figures should be kept on thoat.... I cheat & ask my ICSF..she tells me who to avoid... very handy friend she is! Sorry BWBB ......I bet I've sent you off on a frenzied research mission now.... Guest guest
I KNOW WHY A SURGICAL TEAM WEARS MASKS!!!! It's a bit icky though. If you get a drop of fluid on your lips, the reflex response is to lick your lips. Obviously when you're in theatre you are likely to get, um, splashed . You really DON'T want to be licking off someone elses bodily fluids do you I have a very good friend who is a theatre nurse. Guest guest
I assume that we are particularly vunerable to swine flu or any flue for that matter.. I read that WHO has recommended treatment with Tamiflu, which I assume is an anti-inflammatory medicine since so many on this board have said they have used it. It was also said that this flue floods the lungs with inflammation, a situation I hope to avoid. Guest guest
Jack Influenza is a disease of the respiratory tract, so lungs, ears, nose and throat will all be affected. This is pretty much regardless of what type of flu it is. Flu is something that can cause us problems, if you're concerned by any symptoms contact your doctor immediately. However flu is not a bad cold. Flu is when you are laying in bed and too weak to get to the bathroom. So if you can get to your doctors under your own steam, you probably don't have flu! Tamiflu is an anti-VIRAL and can be effective if taken early when symptoms first start showing. Guest guest
Hi Jack .... yes, I guess extra caution is something we on this board truly must practice. I use those 'wipes' for shopping carts when I go into grocery stores, etc. I too avoid lots of people in one place. Just letting you know I do what you do... A big hug for today! Guest guest
Mama Sher, I'll probably swipe down half the city. I buy the sterilization gel by the gallon in a pump jar and everybody has to use it, especially when preparing food, handling dishes, etc. I use a differemt wipe for counter tops, door knows, steering wheels, etc. If I'm not carefull, I'm likesly to stealrize myself. Not that it would matter. I've done my share of repopulation the earth.
