Guest guest
Jack, Tamiflu is an anti-viral medication. It works against the flu virus in a way similar to the way and antibiotic works against a bacterial infection. It's not in any way an anti-imflammatory medication. Tamiflu and Relenza are the two anti-virals that you will here being talked about in use against this current 'swine' flu outbreak. I read that WHO has recommended treatment with Tamiflu, which I assume is an anti-inflammatory medicine since so many on this board have said they have used it. It was also said that this flue floods the lungs with inflammation, a situation I hope to avoid. I intend to limit myself to contacts with other people as much as possible and may use masks, although one healthy commentator said the viruse passes through the masks Jack79/IPF - UIP/dx06/05 Maine From: Bruce Moreland <brucemoreland@ gmail.com>To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. .comSent: Monday, April 27, 2009 4:39:46 PMSubject: Re: "Swine" flu Jack/MBIt's of great concern here due to the number of people going back andforth constantly. Guest guest
Beth, I saw Dr, Oz on TV last night on Larry King Live. He mentioned the type of mask that we should wear: something with the tighest weave and or barely any airflow. I did not know there were different degrees of those masks. And I am wondering Where do I purchase or obtain these masks? I have tried some from Walgreens but they are too hot. I got two at the doctor's office once but I have already used them. Any suggestions?? Thanks! Toodles! Guest guest
Jane, That's a question I will have to do some research on. You want to buy masks that are going to filter as small a particle as possible. If memory serves you want something that at least filters anything larger than 3 microns. That's very very tiny. Guest guest
Beth, Check with a doctor for sure, but when I had my transplant they gave me 2 kinds of masks. The one yellow one like the blue ones you see are surgical or dental masks. They protect the patients from the doctor or dentist, but don't really protect the person wearing. However, I have used them many times. But the other kind they gave me makes you look like a duck and supposedly protects the person wearing it. I brought a couple of them with me on this trip and also bought one from Magellen Travel (on line. It is cloth but comes with a charcoil filter. I got it in case of VOG here from the volcano. Howeover, I haven't warn it even though we have had some VOG a couple of times here on Oahu (which I think is why I am now coughing). A 3M # 95 mask is supposed to be good, but how you can breathe with those don't suit me, and I have one newer lung.:-) Jeff, my oldest son is on a flight back to the mainland and I bought some Kleenix that are supposed to help protect you from viruses as he got a respitory infection here after the first VOG day. Anyway I would recommend everyone get some of those & of course as CDC says wash your hands, use antaceptic wipes on things and avoid sick people. Now gee how do we avoid ourselves?!!:-) I had to go have more lab tests done last night at Queen's hospital around 9 p.m. and a family was there that looked and sounded Mexican. I did not get in the elevator with them because there were 2 cruise ships that arrived here this week from Mexico. That means when I go to Wal Mart here I will definitely wear a mask and take my hand sanitizers. Guest guest
Judy, Thanks for the info, it's very helpful. So far from what I've been able to glean we need to be looking for and FDA approved "N95" surgical mask. These are intended to protect the wearer from other peoples bodily secrections (sounds just so gross but that's what the spray from a cough or sneeze is) The real trick is the fit...it has to fit well and changing them after a single use. Add to that, meticulous hand washing and just being smart about who you're in contact with. If I find out more I'll share! Guest guest
Thanks, Judy & Beth for the response about the masks. The population where I live is more then 65% Latinos which includes those from Mexico, and many countries in Central America. There is a lot of coming & going & coming for those from Mexico because the economy is very bad (carpet industry) and these families take their children out of school on holidays to go back to visit Mexico and then come back. My list of places to avoid includes Wal-Mart. I also avoid huge crowds. Yesterday I went to K-Mart with and hardly anyone was there. Our family has practiced handwashing as soon as we get home from anywhere. The mission project at our church where I have been playing the piano (Soul Food) where the working poor come for a free meal is attended by mostly Latino families. I stay at the piano in the corner of the large Fellowship Hall. I am now re-considering if I should even attend and play the piano. I am also considering going & playing if I can find a really good mask. Another issue that Eddie & I have dealt with this winter is the germs that brings home because she has been with preschoolers. was sick with a cold most of the winter. I made it through all of that until March when all the pollen came out and bronchitis struck. I also thought about emailing my doctor or nurse at Emory and asking them about the N95 mask. Guest guest
Jane and all,I'm taking all the same precautions that most of you have already mentioned.  I still work part time in a retail environment, but offstage (office) and try to limit my visits around the store and I never take shortcuts by the pharmacy area.  The local news just now had an interview with the head doc with DHEC giving these details for SC:  2 confirmed cases   20 probably cases (awaiting confirmation by CDC)51 suspected cases  72 cases under voluntary quarantine and 1 school closed by DHEC.All cases are clustered around one area where a school trip was made to Mexico by the 2 students who are confirmed. This is scary to have it so close to home.Everyone, be safe!Roxanne, 59, South Carolina 2006 Asthma/ PF 2008 IPF/ Sarcoidosis/Gerd Lady Slipper OrchidSubject: Re: "Swine" fluTo: Breathe-Support Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2009, 12:00 PM Thanks, Judy & Beth for the response about the masks. Hey if I knew where to buy them I would. I hope everyone is having a good day today. Guest guest
Jane, I will be very cautious when the time is right but for now I say continue with life as usual only be aware and listen to the news. We are going to put a pump of sanitizer on the porch at both doors and of course I have clorox wipes all over. I use the hand sanitizer on the handle of my cart if nothing else is available. But we have all been pretty good about hand washing.I tell all the time he's gonna kill me if he doesn't wash his hands enough.. I am just prayin that pig dies.Love ya have a good day. Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida,  IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." Thanks, Judy & Beth for the response about the masks. Hey if I knew where to buy them I would. I hope everyone is having a good day today.Toodles!Jane UIP/IPF 12/1998 Dalton, Georgia aka pianolady_musicgirl> > >> > > Hi everybody,> > > Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it is so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with compromised respiratory systems. > > > From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain of flu from which no one has immunity. Guest guest
We just had the first confirmed case of Swine flu in Maricopa County so now I have to be careful. I like the idea of gloves, hey everybody looks funny at me anyhow as 'Fred' and I (my o2 tanks name is Fred) go trucking on by.... Dyane Phoenix IPF 02 > > I am considering wearing those disposaable latex gloves when going shopping, and touching the shoping cart handle or electric cart handles. I know i will feel weird, but the electric cart handles have groves and I doubt if wiping them down will do much good. also I will be less likely to touch my face or eyes with the gloves on. Marcia >
Guest guest
MB.... do you have any idea what price range these N95 gloves would be? If the mask is changed after one use that's a bunch of masks. I'm glad right now that I don't go out a lot. MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. NasturtiumsDon't fret about tomorrow, God is already there! Re: "Swine" flu Beth, Check with a doctor for sure, but when I had my transplant they gave me 2 kinds of masks. Now gee how do we avoid ourselves?!! :-) I had to go have more lab tests done last night at Queen's hospital around 9 p.m. and a family was there that looked and sounded Mexican. I did not get in the elevator with them because there were 2 cruise ships that arrived here this week from Mexico. That means when I go to Wal Mart here I will definitely wear a mask and take my hand sanitizers. You all take care,Love and Aloha,Judy IPF 11/06 TX 8/07> >> > Hi everybody,> > Just thought I'd mention this since it's all over the news and it is so frightening for everyone but especially for those like us with compromised respiratory systems. > > From what I've gathered what we know is that this is a new strain of flu from which no one has immunity. So far there has not been serious illness in the US from this flu but it's very very early yet. It is being spread from person to person, not from contact with animals.> > > > The precautions to take are the things that all of us already do. Wash your hands frequently, stay away from those with obvious illness. Right now it might not be a bad idea to stay away from large gatherings. For those of us (like me) who are on immune suppressants all those things go double. > > > > If you begin to feel ill, run a fever etc, don't take chances. Get to the doctor. There are two anti-viral drugs (Tamiflu and Relenza) that they say are effective against the virus but you have to take them early in the course of the illness, the first 48 hours or so. So don't waste time, call the doctor.> > > > Anyone else have any ideas to help us all through this?> > > > Beth> > Moderator> > Fibrotic NSIP 06/06 Dermatomyositis 11/08> >>
