Guest guest
Sher, you kind of scared me in to thinking. I go to Walgreens and Wal-mart for meds and neither one knows what the other is giving me. I feel so stupid. It is frustrating trying to find a primary to help me organize all my health issues but I won't give up. There has to be someone out there that can help me and would be willing to work with me to straighten out all the meds, can and cannot do list, can and cannot eat list, sun or no sun... There are so many conflicting instructions from the various doctors that sometimes I just throw up my hands and say whatever. Thanks for your continued support and advice. Keep it coming. Guest guest
Sunny.... as big a task as it is...YOU are your own advocate and figure-it-outer. When you are given an Rx, that is the time to ask questions from doc AND/OR read the print out that comes with an Rx and that will give you lots of info. ALL of it may not apply to you specifically. 'Seek and ye shall find'....seek the reasons within yourself why you are so dependent on others telling you what to do... What if they're wrong??? You have to know yourself and what you're taking and why. All the more important to find a pcp doc who can track most of your care. Then when you see ANOTHER doc, have HIM send notes to the pcp. It helps organize things but only you can keep track as carefully as you need to. I am very careful and extremely organized and I still "went down" so to speak...became over medicated and got where I couldn't walk w/of help. Guest guest
Sher, do you keep a notebook, diary or folder of some kind. I have seen people at my oncologist that have things like that and now I am thinking I should start one of my own. I have typed up and printed a copy of all of my meds, dosages and times I take them. That is in my purse. I have also typed up a list of all of my diagnoses, when and by who to keep with it. I did the same thing with all my allergies or weird reactions to meds. To answer your question, I don't know. I used to be so independent but I think when I first got diagnosed with Lupus something in me gave up and I just let everyone else run everything, did what they said and put up with whatever came. Thanks to wonderful people like those in this "Air Family" I am taking control again. I am a fighter and always have been and nothing not Lupus, PF, CAN, no nothing is going to make me give up. I feel like a fool because I have spent the last five years feeling sorry for myself because all of this hit in such a short time when I should have been aggressively looking for ways to feel better. Looking back Rich has been even more of a rock solid husband than I realized. And you know something else I realized because of all of you? I don't need antidepressants! What I needed was a firm kick in the backside, my Lord and to know others out there have the same problems and cope just fine. My new byword is "research". I will know everything there is to know about the many, many diseases I have and will know the best thing for them. I will not put up with being treated disrespectfully by another doctor either. Man, when I wuss out, I go full tilt. Thanks for the boot when I needed it Sher. Not a lot of people in this world care enough or have the courage enough to ask the tough questions and put the truth out there where it belongs. I read Rich your posts and he is your number one fan. It's hard for him to say what needs said because I get all defensive and weepy so kudos to you my friend. God Bless you. Does any of this sound right to you? I have always trusted Dr. Craig but after yesterday I am having serious doubts. When I told him about not being able to have regular bowel movements he said "cause you don't eat. Eat then you'll then your bowels will move." When I told him how sick and in pain I get when I eat.... HE SHRUGGED! "One thing at a time. Let's get your lungs taken care of then if you still have a problem come back and we will talk about it then." WHAT!!!!!! Feed back from whoever please and yes I can sure pick 'em when it comes to doctors. Sunny PF'09, CAN '09 AND ect... Idaho
Guest guest
Sunny... yes, I do keep a little notebook going. I have to because I simply can't remember the way I used to. At most Dr. offices you can pick up a record keeper for meds....I keep one of those in my purse all the time. Whip it out each time I need the info....change the info whenever I add or delete a med. I also add on there the name/number of insurance, pcp/number and especially ALLERGIES. Once done, it's very easy to keep the info current and handy. It's good if you no longer need antidepressants but if you should in the future don't beat yourself up. I take Cymbalta and wouldn't be without it. Good for you to do the research. One day you will pass on to a newbie the things you have learned. I'm glad I didn't push you away Sunny... Sometimes I get such an urge to reach out and I had that urge with you. I usually see in others places I've been and things I've done in my own life...emotionally I mean...mentally. If I have helped even a little bit then I'm glad I wrote you. Most of us here on the board have experiences to share. Keep on keepin' on, you're getting the hang of it now. MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. NasturtiumsDon't fret about tomorrow, God is already there! Guest guest
Sher - listen up! You have helped way more than a little bit. Don't you EVER change - you are perfect the way you are. I have heeded the advice of all of the wise people in my new "Air Family" but you most of all because something about you speaks to my heart. I spent mucho time listing all allergies & their reactions, meds inc. dosages, prescribing doctor with his phone number, all surgeries and every illness I have or have ever had. Why I never thought it was important to have this info on me at all times is beyond me. You would think I would have learned when I had my big stroke and was unconscious for 28 hours. Thank God Rich was there and knew most of it. I am also going to start journaling my symptoms day to day in detail because when I do get me new improved doctors I want to be able to communicate in a concise way without rambling. I am learning and growing. I so proud of me!!!!! Again thanks for the straight talk. Guest guest
Sunny.... I keep 'notes' for my doc's.... after a visit I jot down questions or how I'm feeling and take to the next visit. Each doc has their own 'page'. I keep a small little notebook but it's so helpful to me. Also helps me to not to impose med problems on the docs who are specialists in another area. If I'm focused with each doc the time with him/her is better used. I'm glad you are feeling good about yourself. Keep on keepin' on. ;o) MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. The scariest thing to me is him telling me not to tell the surgeon that I am on Prozac and Haldol. Both can suppress your respiration, I think so that is information they should most definitely have. I think I just get referred from one bad doctor to another. Is there a bad doctor club? They all take Fridays off so that must be their meeting day when they get together and decide all the weird things they are going to tell patients then the laugh and laugh. I am considering, since Rich is my witness, reporting this doctor to the AMA. I am that upset over his advice. They still don't know why my bowels are blocking and we all no surgery can cause a backup so it seems to me he is endangering my life by telling me withhold this information. What do you think? Sunny From: Beth Sent: Friday, May 01, 2009 5:29 PM To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com Subject: Re: More weirdness from my doctors Sunny, OK I'm going to be really blunt here so pardon me in advance. Do not under any circumstances conceal any medical information from the doctor is is going to be doing your lung biopsy. (I'm assuming that's the surgery you're talking about.) You need to tell the surgeon, along with the anesthesiologist when you talk to him/her everything about your medications and your medical history. Do not conceal anything. If you understood him correctly and this is what he meant to say, it's the worst piece of advice I've ever heard. It's so bad it could endanger your life if you followed it. I don't shock easily but a doctor encouraging you to conceal medical information from another doctor is just stunning. Guest guest
Sher, You have brought up some interesting things here at home. Rich just asked me last night why I always put myself down ie... I'm so stupid. Stuff like that. I used be such of confident person, bachelor's degree, well spoken, read a lot, stay up on current events, stay in contact with others but since I first got sick in 2004 I guess I have slowly become introverted and isolated. Maybe just fear of dying or hating that I can't bring in a paycheck or clean like I used to. I don't know but I feel like I have just woken up from a long bad dream where I was someone else. Now I have to struggle to become my old self again. Does this make any sense to you? I suppose serious illness effects us all in different ways emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. Thanks for listening. Sunny From: Sher Bauman Sent: Monday, May 04, 2009 2:19 PM To: Breathe-Support Subject: Re: More weirdness from my doctors Sunny.... Guest guest
Sunny...You describe what happens when we are in a deep depression and apparently the depression is either lifted or treated....Either way, I'm glad you feel like you are living again. Depression is usually caused by two things: something we will not/can not face or something we will not/can not do. Of course this is a very simplified version but you wrote about fear of dying, no paycheck from you, housework and I'm sure other things that eventually turned you helpless. For many people, (including me) what we 'do' is tied up in our self esteem. If we don't 'do' anything or 'produce' anything then ~ we have no self worth or esteem. ( It took me about 2 years to work my way through no longer working). Add a fatal illness where we gradually 'do' less and less and feel worse and worse then depression is common. Many here take antidepressants (including me). This simplified version helps us to do what we can to identify areas where we can help ourselves and feel better but often depression is a chemical thing and needs to be treated with meds.Withdrawing and isolating are surely among the symptoms of depression. Living with a fatal illness is overwhelming and you're right, we each are affected in a different way and thank God, depression is one area that can be treated and allow us to live our lives with some stability and sanity. Knowing about depression helps me to understand myself...I fight depression and have all my life but with proper medication I function ok. I share with you some of what I've learned along my personal journey and I've tried to keep it brief. ;o) Keep on keepin' on Sunny! MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. Guest guest
Joyce, do you know if they have to give you a copy of your test results at the doctor or ER? Because at the ER the other night I had to fight just to find out what the results said let alone get a copy. It would have helped a great deal when I saw my doctor the next day. If I am entitled to have a copy of everything I am going to do the same as some of you and get a loose leaf binder with tabs for each doc and their tests then an extra one with a copy of all tests. I think I would do much better and feel more confident in dealing with doctors if I had that. I could also research my questions before I go so that they can't poo pah me away. Thanks for the advise!
