Support Groups at Penn or Temple Lung Center

I was curious if anyone knows if Penn or Temple has any support groups that meet on any type of regular basis (i.e. Monthly, Quarterly)? And if so is there a contact person?

The are on 4th Tuesday from 2:30pm to 4:00pm classroom C&D.

The next on 6/23/09 will have Fox talking on the Gift of life.

Also " organ donation, procuremnet, regulations " will be presented.

Thanks for the information. Do you know if the group is specifically for people who have been recently diagnosed with IPF or just transplant members.? I do live in Philly.

You'll find that in person support groups specifically for those of us with pulmonary fibrosis are few and far between. I live a stones throw from Duke which has one of the premier interstitial lung disease programs in the US and there is no pf support group in this area.

Very often there are more generalized groups like Better Breathers but the vast majority of the folks that belong have emphysema or COPD. It means the discussions have virtually nothing to do with me and I just end up feeling even more isolated and misunderstood.

I hope you find something. There are a bunch of you in the general Philly area, maybe a lunch is in order?!

I too went to a better breather's club, but, I got the impression that the pespiratory tharapest didn't know what PF was, so, I'll give it one more try.

I wish there was a way to find out who in our areas might have PF. Doctors, hospitals, or therapy places aren't allowed to say because of privacy laws, but just through the nine weeks I spent in pulmonary therapy in town, I became aware of two others right there. So there must be more. Finding them and establishing our own support/lunch group would be nice, if only to call each other and see how the other is doing.

st mary has a group -- better breathers -- i went a few times but of course most members are copd-- for more info on that group call Hartman or (i forget her last name) both are respiratory therapists at St

i did go there for pulmonary rehab and it was an excellent program

they even asked a man who has ipf to come so I could meet him

after the second time i met him, he got his transplant

did your doc give you a prescription for a pulmonary rehab program?

I live in the West Mt. Airy section of Philly and go to Temple. I have lived here all my life other than my college years. I have many friends who went to Girls High School, but I went to the other GHS (Germantown High School). It is a shame that there are not more support groups for IPF. Maybe if we complain enough there will be more.

Beth, thank you, needed that , LOL i would take normal weight so i stop

hearing i need to be " leaner " .. Believe it or not no to the renal function.. I

was told also that i can throw a lung clot at any time was i aware. Told her no

as what i have learned about IPF has been on line and this GROUP.. I agree with

you. this makes no sense to me.. took me off norvasc again thnking that it is

again.. but i asked the cardiologist wouldn't the swelling be continual and not

sporadic.. appears to be weather related and now i find K low . so don't know if

there is a correlation. I think i will bring the nephrologist up to Nugent as i

have been on max doses for past two months of doxycycline and zyvox so. may be..

-I was told " that sometimes it is more of a cosmetic issue " .. LOL my breathing

changes and my weight changes before i even think to look at my feet..also, it

shows up in my abdomen.. so i am not getting it.. i know with me what it isnt

and it is even what is called dependent edema when your feet are down all day..

i am sleeping and wake up with it and it just increases... Also, watching sodium

intake and processed food.. shame i just love food for the old taste i remember

and the fact it is comfort at times.. lol..Guess we stuck... patti
