When i was in hospital, i had a bacterial?? infection in my port, it

had to come out, the res. doctor just put her fingers on top of it and

pulled it out with her other hand, never felt a thing. So some are

easy to bring out.

I am not sure what I had while in the hospital but it was something attached to

my chest by my shoulder that someone said would hold three lines. It was put in

while I was under. When the Dr went to remove it it seems she just pulled it

off. Her beeper went off at same time and she immediately left. Shortly later I

thought I felt a bug on my neck but when I put my hand up it was all blood.

Anyway they came right in and put a heavy sandbag on it to put pressure and stop

the bleeding.

I have just felt tired all day which is normal but when I checked my temp I do

have a very small fever which puts me right in a panic. They cultured me about

every day for the staph or other infections and thankfully everything was fine.

Being NED should be enough but I am also trying to avoid any infections this

time.

Re: Port Removal

I do not think mine would be that easy to remove. It is sewn in the

muscle tissue to keep it in place. I too was told they could remove it

under general anesthisiology(sp) but that thought is not one I like to

entertain.... Ingrid

Hi, don't remember what kind of port it was. don't know if any one

ever put a name to it, they put it in ,in the hospital, for the chemo

treatment, was close to coller bone, don't think it was sewed in

tho, could have been a stitch or so, when she pulled it out looked

like it was about 6 or so inches, i know i was amazed that it was that

long, real long thin tube. didn't bleed or anything, don't remember

it being sore. ha ha. i have a little spot on my chest where it was.

only had it there for 4 weeks, for chemo, was supposse to take 5

weeks of it, but got too sick, when i had small bowel obstruction and

the bactarial infection, ended up in UK at Lexington , Ky. for 10days

had a tube in my tummy to pull the stuff out, was awful looking black

stuff. the obsturction was caused by 3 bands of adheasions?? know that

isn't spelled right. from 3 other operation i had had. said he got

it all cleaned out, till some new one grow from this last operation

for the tumer.lol

always sosmething.

>>>, I too am real thin. My Port sticks out a lot too. Cannot wear

tank tops or anything that would be closer to the skin. It shows and

I would rather people do not stare where my bump (port) is. It tends

to be sore a lot too. Of course can only wear a bra for short time

periods since the straps have a tendency to rub up against the port.

Onc said I can get it taken out anythime I want. But am worried at

this point. I am opting to keep it awhile. Ingrid

>>>>

Exactly....completely changes your wardrobe when you have to take into

consideration all your blouses, shirts, etc need to 'cover' the port, yet not

'mash' it. I haven't had a bra on for almost two years now. Strap hits exactly

the port. And when in the passenger seat of our vehicles, I can't wear the

shoulder strap.

Then we get to your bottom half of wardrobe. Not everything works with Depends,

and I am sure those who have ostomys have to adjust types of clothing too.

I know it really hurt when they put in my port. Ends up they finally told me the

reason my shoulder was so terribly sore, was the position they had to put it in

to get the port exactly where it needed to be. My shoulder was actually out of

joint for a time.

Now, I dread the removal. I will need to plan around it somehow with my

business, as I work with pottery and I paint. And I'm right handed and port is

on right side:(

And like you, I have a hard time knowing how to handle it mentally. But, I

guess, if the cancer comes back, and I need chemo again....another port will not

be so very high on my list of worries, eh?
