Guest guest
After reading a recent message on this topic I am confused. My report states that my cysteine level is normal, but my sulfate is low. Does this mean I have a high cysteine ratio? And should I be able to tolerate sulfur foods etc... or not. My ND gave me NAC, and MSM. Should I or should I not supplement sulfur? thanks, Sidney

Not long ago Great Smokies stopped doing plasma cysteine and are doing something else instead (can't remember exactly, Andy posted about it when the change was made). With a low sulfate you would probably want to supplement in some form - Mg sulfate (epsom salts) is one easy way. You can bathe in it or take small quantities in food. You would need to determine if you can tolerate sulfur foods and supplements with exclusion and challenge. > My ND gave me NAC, and MSM. > Should I or should I not supplement sulfur? My report states that my cysteine level is normal, but my sulfate is low. ----------Not , but I thought you could no longer get *plasma* cysteine and sulfate tested? When and where did you have the test, and is it plasma, or serum or something else? Otherwise, I was tested a couple years ago, and I was normal cysteine and low sulfate. Here's a link to an old post by Andy about what to do for each combination of these two. http://onibasu.com/archives/am/57707.html For normal cysteine and low sulfate, basically you should supplement with molybdenum, supplement sulfate orally, transdermally, and/or by epsom salt bath, (and sulfate needs to go in as sulfate), and Andy says it is not appropriate to take things like cysteine, msm, or whey, and that thiol intake (meaning sulfur foods) should be moderate, neither high or low. You will be case number 2 on Andy's post, so follow those suggestions.---------Jackie Does this mean I have a high cysteine ratio? And should I be able to tolerate sulfur foods etc... or not. ----------You will probably be able to tolerate some sulfur foods, but not too much. Although some people do best to limit them. I eat some sulfur foods, without a problem. Trial and error is your best test.---------Jackie My ND gave me NAC, and MSM. -----------I don't think Andy ever recommends MSM (going by memory on that one), and I believe he says to try NAC if you are low cysteine and/or low glutathione and/or have MCS. So you could try the NAC and see how it makes you feel, but you may not tolerate it or feel worse on it.-----------Jackie Should I or should I not supplement sulfur? -----------Supplementing *sulfate* is different than taking or eating sulfury things. Since you are low sulfate, you should take epsom salt baths, and could also use magnesium sulfate cream and/or take glucosamine sulfate supplements. Taking other sulfury supplements and eating sulfury foods in excess probably won't be good for you.---------Jackie thanks, Sidney _._,_.___ Messages in this topic (1) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages MARKETPLACE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Earn your degree in as few as 2 years - Advance your career with an AS, BS, MS degree - College-Finder.net. Guest guest
The Genova Comprehensive Liver Detox Profile is giving both cysteine & sulfate levels right now (at least I got that information on a test done in late November).
