Guest guest
So very sorry to hear your mom is having such an awful time. I will pray for her and you. Karima Question...ok, several questions Hi everyone, I've been waiting to post until I had my thoughts together. My mom was suppose to have a pelvic exoneration done this month. But yet another surgeon came along and clipped that very thin thread we were hanging by...again. Seems like everytime someone things of something they might be able to do, its not workable. What I was wondering, is I hear all these great stories of people with stage IV and stage III that go into remission and live many years. Does anyone out there know of someone who was UNABLE to have their tumor removed? My moms is rectal cancer, since they did not remove it they only removed one lymph node from the groin because it was the size of a golf ball and it was positive for cancer. So far they haven't seen anything in her liver. This last set of surgeons explained her tumor as frozen into the pelvic bone, and thats why its not removable because she would never heal, they would have to hack away so much pelvic bone, ect. they tumor is very large and takes up alot of the entire pelvic area. She's still having alot of pain but right now they are increasing her oxcontin (spelling?) to try to find a good dose. I guess I just wish I could find someone who has gone through something similar so we have a clue whats going on. Onc dr says we just keep going with what they are doing, the chemo. The surgeons originally thought 6 months at best and its been 8. Any comments are greatly welcome. Thanks for listening to my rant.

I don't know anything about this, but maybe someone else will have some information links to send you to read up on the matter. I just feel sooo bad that your Mom has to suffer with this pain and you have to watch her suffer. I truly wish there was something I could do to help you through your pain. Tell Mom we all said to keep fighting. Have they taken any scans to see if the chemo is shrinking the tumor or keeping it under control in any way?? We have a similar situation in that the doctors can't seem to agree on a plan of action for Glenn to get him out of his pain, more from the fluid buildup than the actual cancer. It's very scary and unsettling!! You just go ahead and " rant " anyway you like. I know from experience that it's most difficult to watch someone you love deeply to be in such constant pain and suffering and not be able to help. CANCER SUCKS!!! Lots of hugs and prayers, Donelle Caregiver to Glenn Colon resection 6/03 removing 9 in. of colon including cancerous tumore and 3 of 22 removed lymph nodes were also cancerous. Infection set in at surgical site...Open wound for 2 months, chemo for 8 months Mets to Liver found 4/04, inoperable; one tumor too close to artery and vein Chemo infiltration to chest 8/04 with severe side effects including severe pain and muscle damage (permanent??) 10/04 Severe lower ab pain unable to eat, colon shut down, hospitalization w/morphine 8 days. Sent home with basically no diagnosis. Possibly the cancer causing the pain. Ascites (Fluid build-up) and Paracentesis (draining) on a regular weekly basis 11/09/04 on 5FU/Leu/Oxaliplatin/Avastin " cocktails " 46 hr. infusions Mid Dec. 04 - CT. Scan shows largest tumor on liver has reduced 1/3, remaining 11 tumors stable; no growth. Chemo is working...Yippee!! 02/05 Continued bi-wkly Ascites and Paracentesis may mean chemo no longer working. Emergency CT. Scan performed. Tumors are reducing in size, some as much as half!!! Chemo is working!!! Found a blot clot in the vein going in to the liver!!! Waiting for MRI so GI Dr. can decide to treat with meds or surgery. Onc. now believes the blood clot is reason for the continuing Ascites. March 04...Lovamax shots nightly to dissolve the clot and open the portal vein going in to the liver, hoping the liver will function more normally. Still not sure if blood clot or tumor. Why? No answers. ICU hospitalization twice..total of 9 days out of 14 for varices bleeding in the esophogus. No chemo now for 6 wks. Drs., Liver specialists, and GI specialists working on a plan. Ascites is doing more damage than chemo to Glenn's body. Have to " take a chance " (Drs. words) and do the shunt surgery and very SOON!! " Chemo Vacation " to build up Glenn's body for whatever!!! Liver Spec. does not agree with GI Dr. re: shunt surgery...now what?? TRYING TO KICK BUTT with this darn disease!!!

Guest guest
Jolene, No they said surgery will not ever be an option. The cancer will not be able to be removed. She had radiation to begin with (with chemo) and because of all the damage from that and the damage from the tumor its self they said she would never heal and it would probably kill her. The thought of them leaving it, just seems so wrong but I understand what their saying.

Guest guest
Ranting is okay especially when you are up against the wall... I tried to do a google on pelvic exoneration and didn't come up with much info at all. Sorry the doc nixed that idea. They make her condition sound so ominous. ... sounds similar to my husband's situation as well. When they finally realized he had cancer, it had eaten into (from his groin) his right leg bone (where is attaches to him). What he had was non-hodgkins lymphoma and back then 97-99 not easily curable... I assume they are hoping the chemo will shrink everything down to a manageable size... so that surgery might be an option later on. You are definitely faced with some choices and I will continue to pray for your mom and the family. Miracles do happen... God Bless and Big hugs JOlene >

Guest guest
I have stage 4 with mets to liver and lungs. My primary tumor in my rectum was/is inoperable. The chemo managed to keep it from causing problems. I am lucky I have no pain and I understand when the tumor is in the bone it is quite painful. Has she tried acupuncture for pain? It is supposed to be great for pain. Good luck.
