It looks like you are in fact taking betaine hcl. My only

question is if it is 850 mg of TMG, how much betaine hcl is that?

It looks like you are in fact taking betaine hcl. My only

question is if it is 850 mg of TMG, how much betaine hcl is that?

Hi ,

I'm lost on this. I had thought it was 850 mg of TMG and 850 mg of

betaine hcl. I'm guessing from you question that it isn't possible?

Is it more that it's 850 mg of TMG and it's bound to the betaine hcl

as a carrier of sorts? So who knows how much betaine hcl there

really is? -- Is this a more plausible way for me to understand

this? Is this how supplements work?

As you can tell I'm a little confused.

I wasn't saying it wasn't possible. I was mostly being confused

by the labeling :)

What I find with a quick internet search suggests both betaine and

betaine hcl can be called trimethylglycine. Apparently you have

850 mg of the betaine hcl form.

Hi Stephaine,

I did a search too now that you mentioned it. Do you think all

betaine hcl is TMG? I saw a lot that said betaine was TMG and only a

few references that said betaine hcl was TMG. I saw some references

that made me question if betaine and betaine HCL were the same thing?

So if I bought a bottle that just said betaine hcl would that be TMG

also? I'm asking because of post #24710 that suggests TMG may be

adding to high cysteine & sulfur problems. So now I'm wondering if I

can't take the TMG/betaine hcl? And then what do I do for stomach

acid?

Sorry to be so thick. I'm just really confused about my digestive

problems and how to help them. See my post #24745. I don't

tolerating carbs & sweets including fruit, I was planning to do SCD

(w/o the fruit & honey - I need some gut healing), but just realized

that eggs are a big problem for me too. So I don't know if it's a

food allergy (from eating them every day for a few years now) of if I

have sulfur food problems and have to cut them out now too, which

leaves me with not much to eat. So now I'm wondering if betaine hcl

if that and TMG are the same thing & TMG may increase cysteine in the

blood then can I not have betaine hcl too? I hope I'm not talking in

circles.

If I can believe wikipedia, betaine hcl is the chloride salt of

trimethylglycine and is different from plain old betaine. Not much

different, presumably just has hcl added on.

Maybe the more chemically-inclined (?) can give us a chemistry

lesson to clarify the difference, or at least can give a more

authoritative answer than mine (I've had no chemistry since high

school :)

TMG is not included on Andy's list of sulfur foods and supplements.

I don't think you need to avoid it unless you notice a problem with

it.

If you have a reaction to eggs, don't eat them. Instead, try to

identify what foods you can eat without problems and limit your diet

to those. Make a list of safe foods and problem foods. Your next

step might be to figure out what is going on with the problem foods

(allergy, salicylates, yeast-feeders, etc) and what to do about it.

If you are worried about the TMG issue, then don't take it until you

feel more comfortable that it is safe.
