Guest guest
Deb, I don't remember where you live but all the hospitals I have been in have a person called a Patient Representative. Go to the admitting office in person and demand to see the Pt. Rep. It is her/his responsibility to make sure that the patient needs and the family are given everything and every bit of information available. There is also a Discharge Nurse who is responsible for seeing that the patient is being discharged with all needs met to the best of her ability. I am a former nurse and know that you are being shuffled aside so stand up and demand answers. You can also file a complaint, just write out in your own words what is going on and what has happened or NOT happened during moms' stay and give a copy to the Charge Nurse, the nurses station, the doctor AND the hospital Administrator. Trust me, the wheel that squeeks the loudest gets the grease. Also check with the Salvation Army store, Goodwill store and secondhand stores in your area for commodes, wheelchairs, etc. If she is on Medicare you can often get these purchased new and covered by insurance. Guest guest
The hospital and doc, as well as nurse in charge have a LEGAL,as well as moral ethics, to provide adequate discharge planning and arrangements for any patient's care prior to they're leaving the hospital. SO stand there and REFUSE to take her until the proper followup care arrangements are made. The doc owes you/your dad, an explanation. Without it he is guilty of negligence. Demand that he talk to you prior to her being discharged. They can't throw her out in the street and they can't discharge her without sufficient arrangements. and If she has not chosen to do hospice at this time, public health nursing services(available in every county in the US)can assist in providing/locating home care and supplies, etc. It's what they do. I am absolutely applalled that you are being treated in such a manner. If I were in your shoes and did not get some immediate answers, I'd be on the phone to the state medical association. Good Luck! Guest guest
Oh My goodness... I almost missed this email... I can't believe they are doing this to your mom. They don't know what to do so they are just sending her home? That just doesn't make any sense at all.. I sure would file complaint like Jan said below. Might even call a lawyer or at least threaten to call one if they don't do what they can for your mom. That is just a crying shame - you could even call the local tv news if you want some real publicity... Stand up and fight for your mom's right to decent care... Those things you need should be covered by medicare but doc may have to authorize some stuff.jj Guess you will be looking for new doctor as well - sure wouldn't let that bunch treat her anymore. Hang in there kiddo.... Hopefully your mom will feel better at home and get her wits back. Has to be something causing that -- definitely find another doc asap so they can examine her and figure out what happened to her... Big Hugs.... Guest guest
WHen we made the decision it was time to bring in hospice last year for my 67 year old Dad they referred us to a social worker too. Her job was to help explain to my Dad why hospice was being called in. We brought him home with us and the hospice nurses came to us. I wasn't going to put my best friend in a home either. For the most part they supplied everything. They brough us a portable commode, wheelchair, walker, adult diapers etc...and the medicines too. Our job was to do everything else...feeding, bathing, changing...though sometimes a nice nurse would actually help us out. Don't be afraid to ask questions........ask a lot of them all of the time. It's the only way they will tell you anything. Thinking of you+ deb vamdembos debbied31@...> wrote: Remember the spinal tap they were gonna do on mom and the psych eval.????? Guest guest
Deb: In my experience, you should be able to get any equipment she needs through Medicare. When my Aunt came home from Re-hab for a broken hip, they had the bedside commode, walker, air mattress (rental), cane, etc. set-up to delivery the afternoon we brought her home. See if her Dr. will write you a prescription for what she needs. If not, contact one of the medical supply businesses and they can point you in the right direction.
