Guest guest
oj francesca.. No wonder you are feeling down (typing this with tears in my eyes and I didn't even know your dog sounded lovely though ;o) ).. my step dad always told me dogs go to the " eternal grass fields " I kind of like the idea that your loved dog goes to this huge grassy sunny place where s/he can run around and be happy (at least until you can join them again) but yes what a way to go with your belly full of chocolate ;o) Lonnie Phoebe & Eloisa's mama & expecting a Christmas delivery... My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what you start. So far today, I have finished 2 bags of chips and a Chocolate cake. I feel better already. My dog Basil I have been very quiet this weekend as on Friday evening my lovely brave Border Collie, Basil, lost his long fight against arthritis and we made the decision to have him put to sleep. His arthritis was spreading to his spine and he could not walk very far without his back legs going all wobbly so he was having a few little trips round to the post box and back, but he was happy with that and pottering round the garden. He was fine on Friday morning and at lunchtime. Then I took DD1 off to swimming and when I returned, we sat outside with our ice creams (DD2 was asleep in her cot). I told Basil that when DD2 woke up I would take him for a walk. He was happy and bouncy and wanted to go. Then I went inside, noticed their water bowl was empty, filled it up and heard Basil whine (which he never ever did). I went over to him and he could not get up - one of his back legs had gone. DH had come home and so we helped him up together and moved him to the carpet but he was puffing and panting and obviously in pain. We gave him more painkillers but really we knew it was hopeless. DH took him to the vet and they confirmed what he said so he brought him home again and the vet came round half an hour later to put him to sleep. Before he did so though Basil had a huge Easter egg (don't tell DD1!) and died very peacefully being cuddled by us both (in floods of tears). Way to go eh with a belly full of chocolate!! Missing him so much as since his bladder op last year he followed me everywhere (even accompanying me on middle of the night excursions to the DDs). We both feel though it was the right decision and are relieved that he was not in pain for that long and was a happy bouncy bean-full dog right up to three hours before he died. Sorry to be so depressing ....... Guest guest
Dear Francesca Sending you lots of hugs over poor Basil - it's very hard to lose animals and often not recognised how much we grieve over them and I expect you will miss him for a long time...dogs have such an amazing capacity to give love and companionship (as do cats) I'm glad you were able to give him a lovely chocolately and loving peaceful end...but now no longer suffering...and eventually your puppy memories and fine young dog memories will resurface again, (a happy bouncy > bean-full dog right up to three hours before he died) Sorry to be so > depressing .........Francesca aren't we here to share your pain as well as your giggles...?! I said goodbye to a very beloved female cat two years ago .. it's still sad but her love is still with me now.. On a more cheering note my 9 month old choc Molly got a Special Award in the Prettiest Bitch class of our local dog show today!! she has a lovely cream rosette (good colour for her too) - and Alfie (13 months) got the consolation prize of a bag of Bonios in the Handsomest Dog class. Our shepherd got a prize in the Handsomest Dog and Best Pup class with a 9 month old welsh type of collie that in colouring was like a doberman (but can't remember the name) - he only understands a dog whistle or Welsh!!! She only just got him four weeks ago from deepest Builth ...but now can manage 'sit' in English!! Please could one of our Welsh speakers post a list of dog type commands in Welsh/English?!! Jenni?? Hugs Francesca love Caro

I know just how you feel as I made the same desision for my gorgeous Springer Spaniel " Peru " 3 years ago, and it still hurts. She was suffering from cancer and had a recurring tumour next to her bottom which made going to the toilet very painful when it got too large. We had it removed twice but then it came back so fast I had to let her go. In the end it was a very quick decision, I could see she was suffering so I phoned the Vet and made an appointment for an hour's time. We went for a long walk first though, and I let her snuffle through the bins and eat all the rubbish she fancied for a change! I had to drive home alone though and I was so shaky and upset it's a wonder I made it at all. It's awful to have to go through this, but in the end it is the one thing we CAN do for our pets which we can't do for other loved ones; let them go with dignity whilst having a loving cuddle too. You've made me remember how it felt at the time, but - really - it does get easier. Your giving your dog the chocolate reminded me of Peru's delerious (sp?) happiness at being allowed mouldy old sandwiches, crisp packets and other disgusting stuff - Yum Yum!! Doggy heaven! Guest guest
You poor thing, I really feel for you. I have got to make a decision on my old horse blackJack, who is really suffering from arthritis. He is nearly 30, and he saved my life after my depression following the death of my first horse Meg when I was only 17. I dont want him to suffer again this winter, but whenever I think the time has come, ghe suddenly perks up and runs about! Terrible thing to go through. I am only glad we dont have to make decisions like this about humans. Big hugs to all of you. Dont know if this will help, but when my pets died as a youngster, my parents used to bury them and plant a tree or a rose bush over them, that way they seemed to live on, and helped me and my brother to get over it. Guest guest
I know *exactly* how you feel, having lost my beloved dog about 18 months ago to cancer. I still look round expecting her to be there and it is very strange when the doorbell goes and there is no instant barking. Bryony saw it as her job to let any potential nasty people know that there was a very fierce and protective dog behind the door, although in truth she was more likely to run away when I opened the door. She was gentle and loving and amazingly patient with the children - and all the cats loved her! Lots of hugs and beautiful memories. Alison I have been very quiet this weekend as on Friday evening my lovely brave Border Collie, Basil, lost his long fight against arthritis and we made the decision to have him put to sleep.
