The Texas Department of Health wants to create a new outreach/awareness

campaign to educate migrants and their families about the health services

that are available to them.

I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone who has found effective or

successful tools or efforts (such as Hispanic/Latino radio, print materials,

one-on-one outreach, for examples) for reaching out to the migrant

population.

Mucho gracias! Thanks in advance.

Belinda-

We have been developing non-formal outreach materials for the Spanish-speaking

farmworking population in Florida for the the past 10 years. We have developed

a combination

of

fotonovelas, radionovelas, novela-style posters and calendars to be used as

tools by outreach

workers

on HIV, CHIP, Eye injury awareness, literacy, family preservation, etc.. You

can check out

examples of

our materials on our website: www.rwhp.org or give us a call!

Good luck. Robin Lewy

Hi Robin,

I'm not sure if I ever reported to you our response to your questions, so

here it is. We think that you should use the first slogan and develop the

PSA for women. Your plan to use a testimonial sounds good and the theme

being that of protecting children is good. We are less sure of the plan

vis-a-vis men. I think that we should arrange to do a few focus groups in

El Paso - with help from the US Mexico Border HEalth Assn -- and then see

what information we have on slogan and approach. Steve will continue to

work on contacting radio stations -- he's gotten 2 El Paso stations, but

having trouble contacting Mexican ones. In the next week or two, we'll

resolve the question of which station to use and find out whawt format they

want the psa in. Finally, the phone number to use will be that of Planned

Parenthood. Hope this gets you started. Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi o

At the Hispanic Health Projects, Dept. of Anthropology, Idaho State

University, we've been gathering data on health needs, beliefs, racial

disparities, etc etc among the Hispanic farmworker community for

several years now. If you have specifics that you need just drop me an

email. We also have a large binational study that is in its second year

with our sending communities in Guanajuato Mexico. This summer we'll be

starting up promotora de salud programs both in Idaho and Guanajuato.

HI Liz,

I would much appreciate if you could share health needs, disparity

information about Hispanic Farmworkers in Florida. We know there is a large

Farmworkers community and streams in the state, but do not have specific

information necessary to tailor cancer education and outreach efforts for

them.

o, I am also with the CIS (Coastal Region), and would like to

collaborate with you on CIS efforts for Hispanics.
