Guest guest
Donna, Don't confuse oxaliplatin and xeloda. The xeloda is similar to 5FU and is sometimes given in place of it in regeimes. But it does not have the benefits of oxaliplatin(which is a much harsher drug, but has better results stats) As to the hair, I think that has got to be one of the worst for women & not much you can do about it. Though it does grow back when the chemo is done. My only suggestions are to 1)get a wig that's very like your own hair or 2)develop a passion for hats or 3)start a new style trend and have the rest shaved and wear it with pride! Most beauty shops are very good about helping to choose wigs/hair pieces. The ACS also provides them free. Ask at your infusion center for info. Good Luck! Guest guest
You should all check with Cancer society, they give you a free wig... Just saw something on tv about it recently. Good quality wigs too. Guest guest
OMG. Don't tell me my hair is going to fall out. I am only on chemo number 3 tomorrow. Yikes. I am going to go looking for a wig next week after the effects of the chemo wear off. I hate Oxaliplatin also. I feel horrible on it. I know it is the cause of the stomach pain and that raw feeling I was having (with fever) last week. I also have a form of neuropathy in my jaws - I have lots of pain when I try to bite down on something no matter how soft or small it is. It starts before I leave the oncologist's office. Let's all pray that the Oxy is truly killling those stage 4 chemo cells. I hope it is worth it. I'll quit whining. You are right Ingrid, I was thinking the xeloda would replace the oxy. I remember now. I've read some of you have had pain in the abdomen. What about pain more in the stomach area. Not a bathroom issue - no problem with anything I eat going thru me! Mine has been aching for a couple of days. Maybe I'll call the dr tomorrow. Guest guest
Donna, My hair started thinning pretty bad about half way through the chemo too. You will not lose it all. I did'nt. It does come out a lot. Seemed to slow down the off week between the chemo. It will grow in when chemo is done. Mine has started growing in real good. The Xeloda is a pill you take instead of the 5-FU. You will still need the OXY. I think it is the OXY that causes the hair thinning. The hair loss should start slowing down shortly. Just take it one day at a time. This is only temporary. You are fighting for your life with the chemo. Please just bear with this. Your hair will grow back. You will not lose all of it. I fully understand your feelings. I too cried when my hair came out. There is a end to the chemo. You will get there. You are half way there. six more to go. Now the countdown will go quicker. Stay strong. I am Praying for you. Ingrid > Okay girlfriends, help me out here.....ya'll said hair would thin. Mine was thinning and this weekend it seemed to just fall out. Guest guest
I remember reading at some point that the pain or burning in the stomach area is caused by the intestinal wall sloughing off. I think it had something to do with the chemo attacking those cells in the intestine. Those cells are a fast growing cells so chemo attacks those cells too. I too had a lot of uncomfortable burning in my stomach area while on chemo. Yes, I fully understand that feeling of being sick and tired and being tired of it. Just hang in there. And I must bring this up to you. Round six to twelve in chemo does not have to be the hardest. It can and might be just like the other chemo rounds. All that I noticed that the more into chemo I got the longer the tingling in hands and feet lasted. Everyone is different. And every chemo round is different. The later rounds towards the end of chemo do not have to be the roughest. It may just be like all the others. What they mean is that your body gets weeker from the chemo and it takes longer to get over the chemo. When it took maybe two to three days to feel like yourself again may take a day or two longer. Just relax. It may not be that bad for you. My last few chemo's were just harder for me to get over the side effects. You will make it through this. You have too!!! Stay strong and just realx and get the rest you need. Stop trying to push yourself. Just baby yourself and take care of yourself. Guest guest
There were days I wished that I was by myself during the chemo. Then I would of been able to get more rest. I was always too worried about this or that for my husband and son. My husband was NOT to happy about me taking the chemo. He did not support me through it. When I would get real sick he would keep saying quit the chemo. I am glad I stuck through it. But it was the ones here on the board that helped me get through it. Just take it one day at a time. I know, that is easier said then done. I am Praying for you to have the strength to get through this. What ever you decide about the chemo is your decision and all here will abide by your decisions.
