I forgot I also have a question. My heart rate after a very short walk around the Pulmo doc's office was 186. Doc questioned whether I had been checked for an enlarged heart in the last few years. Is this a symptom of IPF? Does anyone else have this? I have been paying attention to that number on my O2 meter now and almost any activity elevates my heart rate really high. Any thoughts are welcome. And Jack I will be at the picnic and I am bringing Haggis.

Sunny,

I would be concerned about your heart rate also. Has the doctor suggested an echocardiogram? Your heart seems to be working very very hard to get oxygen to your body. This is a concern that I would bring to my doctor asap. Have you gotten any feedback from the doctor concerning your overnight sats? I would think that dropping to 81 should bring an immediate prescription for oxygen to be used at night at the very least.

I understand that insurance won't pay for oxygen when you stay above 90 (Medicare has the same types of guidelines) but I'm curious about what they had you doing at the office when they were measuring your sats? Did they do a full 6 minute walk? You and I have around the same lung function (about 40%). It always fascinates me how differently our bodies react and cope with these illnesses. I've been on oxygen for almost 3 years now and without it I wouldn't be conscious for very long. LOL

We talked here a couple of days ago about 24 hour oximeter test. Yours is a situation where it might really be valuable. If your doctor does not want to do that I would keep a detailed diary of your sats using your own oximeter and get it to him. I suspect you are probably dropping below 90 on a regular basis as you go through your day. The way our sats respond in the controlled environment of our doctors office if often very different from the way the respond in our every day lives.

Sunny, Have you been checked out

for PH..Pulmonary Hypertension?

They usually do an echo-cardiogram sometimes followed by a cardio-cath.

PH and IPF seem to be joined at the hip!!!

Good luck!!

My heart rate was erratic but ran high, sometimes to 165. My cardio guy put me on Metoprolol or something like that to control it, which it does. Brought it right down, stabilized it, then it was recalled. So we're starting over.

Ethex is a manufacturer of generic drugs

and has issued a recall that includes metoprolol succinate er which is a

generic version of toprol xl. WalMart Pharmacy uses another manufacturer

of the drug and is not involved in the recall. The following FDA website

contains some information about the recall (which is voluntary)

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/ethex01_09.html

I don’t remember the name of the drug

manufacturer that Walmart uses

I would recommend you contact the FDA if

you need more information.

My wife has been on toprol xl for many

years and has used the generic version since it was available. The mail

order pharmacy was unable to get the generic version for her last order so

after I researched the problem we ordered the brand name drug and paid the premium

price for it until the manufacturing problem is resolved.

I hope this helps

I'm sure you know that the recall wasn't related to the performance of

the drug or specific problems, but was related to some conditions under

which it was manufactured not meeting good manufacturing practices and,

in the case of some, the dosage perhaps being more than stated. The

specific recalled lots were identified, which I think was pretty much

the whole supply out there at the time.

Now, as to its use. Metroprolol is used for many things, one of which is

hypertension. However, it is not prescribed as far as any sites I've

found for pulmonary hypertension and there may be contraindications for

those with breathing issues. There are other medications specifically

approved for pulmonary hypertension.

So that does make the specific diagnosis very important.

Ha, tests, now that would be something you would think they would get right on. Well they did do the biopsy but won't tell me the results until I see the doc tomorrow. Meanwhile I will just keep getting dizzy and nearly passing out. Sorry I am just frustrated. My pulmo is checking with my cardio to get an echo.

Beth,

I did two laps around the office. It took about 2 minutes and I dropped to 91%. My pulmo guy says the fingertip oxymeter that I have is not accurate which I think is nonsense since every time I feel I am having a problem the meter verifies that indeed either my heart rate is very high, my oxygen is very low or both. Pulmo guy is contacting cardio guy to see if we shouldn't schedule an echo. And no, the doctor won't tell me anything about my biopsy or overnight sats until I see him tomorrow in person. Thanks for being there EVERYONE! You guys help me cope.
