Guest guest
I'm sure someone(s) here will have some experience of making loose covers. I'm hoping to revamp an old armchair - it has wooden arms so only the upholstered back and seat cushion need to be covered. I have a couple of books with instructions in them, but I wondered how easy it would actually be in practise. (I've done a fair bit of dressmaking in the past, but seem only to manage mending and sewing lables into school uniforms these days!) It's going to be in DS1's bed room so the occasional wash will be necessary and it won't be treated with loving care! Do you think that using velcro or popper strip would be better than a zip - so that it would just come open rather than tear if it gets some rough and tumble treatment from the boys? Some how I can't see that just covering it with a throw is a viable alternative as it would always be 'thrown' on the floor along with the dirty socks! (I keep hoping that leaving dirty socks about the place is a phase, but it has been going on rather a long time.....) Liz Goudie
Guest guest
Liz, I've never done it, but can't imagine it would be *terribly* hard - just fiddly and requiring concentration (oh, famous last words!) Jocasta Innes has some instructions that look reasonably intuitive in her Thrifty Decorator book (or similar title - my sister's pinched it so am not absolutely sure...) I'd go for velcro rather than zips or poppers - then it will come apart rather than tear, but if it shrinks in the wash, the velcro will stick to the fabric underneath, too which poppers and zips wouldn't.
