Guest guest
Actually, I've never seen a pulmonologist. The diagnosis was made at my initial exam at the VA. About a year later when I had a heart episode my cariologist ordered the pulmo test with I had with a technician a month ago They still have not read the test though the tech stopped the test at one point and said I should apply for disability. The cariologist, I really like, ordered the CAT Scan. I hope after the pulmo tests and the CAT Scan results are read that I will qualify for a pulmonologist. You have been the most helpful! Please tell me how you are doing! Are you on oxygen, etc.? Ken R. Guest guest
Ken, Your post boggles my mind. It's so difficult to understand that they would diagnose ILD from a chest x-ray and not immediately get you a pulmonology consult. I confess to ignorance regarding how the VA medical system works. Is there nothing you can do? Can you request to see a pulmo? If you can that should be at the tippy top of your list of priorities. ILD's can't really be diagnosed based on a chest x-ray. They can see things on a chest x-ray that then get differentiated and diagnosed accurately with a high resolution ct scan or a lung biopsy. I hope you get some better answers soon! Guest guest
Peggy, I guess - I was told by several primary care doctors that I have ILD but never by a pulmonologist. Some doctors call it PF. I just had a stress test this week and was told I am lacking oxygen to my heart. I got a copy of my medical records and they say I have it. All this from one chest x-ray. I have never smoked so it is a mystery. Ken R. Guest guest
Ken, There are many of us here who have never smoked, including me. In general smoking is not considered to be a causative factor for most types of pulmonary fibrosis. Everyone assumes lung disease = smoking and in this case it's just not necessarily true! Guest guest
Beth, I am super excited about the CAT Scan my pulmonologist scheduled for the 28th - SUPER EXCITED! I want definite answers so I can get on with my life. I didn't know anything until I found this support group.. It never occured to me that an x-ray was not enough. My records don't say may have or probably they just say I have it. In defense of the VA they have been totally outstanding in every other area. The initial doctor I had was temporary and I think things just got burried and I never pushed it. In fact my ignorance was so profound that I went several months not thinking a thing about it.. When I was told my lungs were scared I thought, no big deal, I had pnumonia as a kid so it probably happened then. I was totally shocked when I started looking it up. Please tell me how you are doing; I really want to know!!! Guest guest
Ken, Oh don't misunderstand...I'm not criticising the VA. I am just fairly ignorant about the way they system works. I know that the VA hospital here in Durham has a pretty excellent reputation. It is directly across the street from Duke Medical Center and there is a lot of sharing of resources so I'mn told this VA hospital benefits from that. I am doing well. I was diagnosed when I was 46 with NSIP (non-specific interstitial pneumonitis) almost 3 years ago. I'm on oxygen 24/7 and have been since my diagnosis. I also have an autoimmune connective tissue disease called dermatomyositis that was diagnosed late last fall. I've been pretty much stable since I was diagnosed and remain reasonably active. As long as I keep waking up in the morning you won't here me complaining!
