Guest guest
Jane, My mother is on Avastin right now and we just had an appointment with the Dr to discuss if she should continue it. My mom had heard about the issues that patients with ovarian cancer are having with Avastin. She was very concerned. My mom has rectal cancer. They were unable to remove her tumor, its very advanced so it will eventually end her life. The Dr has told my mom that he plans to leave her on the Avastin indefinitely, as long as she will take it. What I can tell you about Avastin is that for my mom its working. Her CEA level went from 89.5 to 2.4 in 10 treatments (with oxal, leuk and 5fu). Her Dr. has not seen any perforations that he could account to Avastin but its a risk that is there. My mom has decided that she will continue to take the Avastin for now because it gives her the best chance to stay around. Has anyone else been on Avastin long term? I would be interested to hear what they have to say too.
Guest guest
Hi Jane, I have been on avastin and Oxaliplatin along with Xeloda. I did my third, three week, infusion today. I am not perfectly comfortable but nothing serious like a perforation. I am not taking coumadin. Good luck. I hope the remainder of your life goes very well and that you enjoy it. The pet scan showed the tumor in my duodenum(we knew that one was still there anyway) and it also showed a speck in my liver again. The dr. is recommending Irinotecan and Avastin. I told her I had concerns about avastin and she said that she did too. I am more wary of avastin then I was starting the erbitux. I was wondering what others have experienced with the avastin and if anybody on the list got bleeding or a perforation from it. I take coumadin because I had a blood clot. The dr. said they would watch me very carefully. The good news today was that my blood count is the best it has been in over a year. My hemoglobin actually hit the 12 mark. My dr. again reiterated that the duodenal cancer would eventually take my life. But she said we could keep doing chemo to prolong my life. I understand this but I am stubborn. Thanks for any info on the avastin.
