Guest guest
Hi Aldyth, Now I need to run to work..so this needs to be short...sorry. I experimented with splitting my PTU, and for ME it worked best to take my slightly larger dose at night. You can try both ways for say, a week at a time, and see how you do. My requirements were to be able to get my pants on in the MORNING and get to work, and still be able to sleep at night. When I took my PTU, if it was a slightly larger portion early, I ended up finding I was not truly effective till about the time I was almost due for another dose. Since I work by the job and not by the hour, I am very aware of these things. Back at that point, I found I was hitting about 2 in the afternoon, and feeling GOOD...so I really put on the rush and got lots done, because I knew I had to take more PTU by 3:30. It was an odd feeling. Not hyper...because I was not angry or hungry. And I often held my hands out with a piece or paper on them...to double check to see if I was starting to shake at all. I think I was just not hypo. :-) from the larger dose. Those that know me, know I am probably overly picky about the exact right thyroid level, and that is why I experimented and got to be an expert on picking the exact right size 'shard' of PTU needed for the next eight hours planned activities. Given time, you will figure out what works best for YOU. -Pam L-

Guest guest
I agree, Aldyth. Actually, I'm one of those who doesn't split. But I take methimazole, too, which can be taken once a day, unlike PTU. I experimented with splitting my dose last winter, and found I couldn't sleep when I split my dose, so I take all mine at night. I tried the morning thing, too, and I just couldn't sleep. I'd take the larger dose at night if I were you. If it doesn't work, you can always change. Holly Dx. 8/2001; 5 mg.
