My low sugar diet really helped. I got up to 245 pounds, and have since shed 25 pounds, and despite not being so rigorous with the diet it has stayed off. The diet involved not buying all the things we know are bad, so I wouldn't be tempted, especially ice cream, biscuits, crisps, soda drinks, and abandoning desert courses (alcohol was gone anyway). I lost weight through the diet despite minimal exercise (I just didn't feel up to it). Unsweetened popcorn (home popped) settled the odd carbohydrate cravings, that or no salt and sugar muesili. I can't make sense of the diet changes that worked, and what is suppose to happen in hyper/hypo thyroidism, but there are issues surrounding sugar, carbohydrate, and cholesterol. Quite a lot of hypothyroid patients swear by low carbohydrate diets, and quite a lot has been written on the topics. Shomon of www.thyroid.about.com has a lot to say on the issue of thyroids and weight. Do you have cravings? Have you lost the hyperthyroid eat any and every thing mode ? (that tooks me years to shift, not least as my family all expected me to eat like I did when I was hyperthyroid and look disappointed if I don't finish all the left overs off at family events.) First thing of course is realistic target weight, all our GPs nurses have a weight height chart, and these tend to allow quite a generous margin for healthy. I think staying in that range is achievement enough for the hormonally challenged. Simon
