ahhhhh I really feel for you, for me its tunnels and when we go to the Lakeside

shoppping centre at Thurrock I hate the tunnel I'd much rather dgo over the

I understand totally where you are coming from though, any fears of anything is

horrible, sorry I can't be of mush help, but I thought I would just let you know

that I am thinking about you!

Good Luck for August!!

Oh help - I'm going to own up to my biggest fear - In August I'm taking the

girls to Wales and the only way there from Poole (where ferry docks) apart for a

very long detour is over one of the bridges and I am TERRIFIED. The last time

dh & I did it I sat in the passengers seat with my hands over my eyes, shaking

and sweating and this time I am driving. Just looked at the photos on the web

and they have bought me out in a sweat. I can see half a gallon of rescue

remedy being consumed.

I'm not bridge phobic as such but I must confess to a certain

uneasiness when crossing a footbridge across a busy main road, they

always seem so flimsy to me, and you can feel them vibrate with each

step.. and with my *cough* being a bit heavy, I always wonder...what

if....

I feel for you, I really do! I hate driving over Snake Pass - which is the

quickest way to my Mum's from here. If I absolutely have to do it, then I

go at snail's pace, trying very hard not to look to the side where the huge

drop is, and pulling into laybys occasionally to let the huge queue of

traffic behind me disperse! I've only just got my head round driving over

Woodhead, which doesn't have anything like the drop. Mountain passes are

just not my thing and I'm afraid the Peak counts as mountains, in this case!

Mostly, I go for the long and tedious detour, and just make sure I have

plenty of tapes/drinks/biscuits in the car for the kids!

Caroline, can you just focus very closely on the car in front and not

take your eyes off it, keep reading the number plate or something,

until you get over the other side?

Hope you get over it OK, the bridge that is!

I'll never forget the holiday where we stopped off at the Lake

District on our way to Scotland and drove over Wrynose (?sp) pass, in

the fog/drizzle. Scared the life out of me. I knew I was hysterical

when I said " Rhinos couldn't pass on here! " and then giggled for 10

mins. Emma was only 3 at the time and kept asking us why we were

driving on the fields cos all she could see out of her windows was

grass!

Can you make a tape of very loud singalong songs foro the journey, so

you and the girls can all sing at the top of your voices? Might be

useful way to let off steam in some traffic jams as well ;-) Something

like 'Rocking all over the world' springs to mind, I don`t know why!

Caroline, You're terrified of crossing water on a solid structure firmly

attached at each end, yet you are able to cross miles of sea on a floating

bridge ie car ferry. Perhaps if you perceive the bridge as a boat anchored to

the coast at each end you'll be fine.

Curious to know what you'd make of a real floating bridge eg Dartmouth?

Also the new Severn bridge is really un-bridge like as its so wide and there's

so much traffic its more like being on a long flyover on the motorway, no time

and too much traffic to look down and see the water - perhaps you should see it

as just that, a long flyover.

Mountain passes are

> just not my thing and I'm afraid the Peak counts as mountains, in

I hate heights so I'm terrified of mountain passes too, but weirdly my

biggest fear is very narrow roads, makes me feel really

claustrophobic. In the Lake District some of the roads were so narrow

that we could just about fit our car down them. Dh had to drive and I

would just sit with my eyes closed. It was more than just a fear of

meeting another car from the opposite direction, I just felt totally

hemmed in.

Hating heights is part of it - though I have no problem provided I'm

*climbing* the rockface concerned: it's being on top of it that gets me -

this is quite common amongst climbers, bizarrely :)

I think a lot of it, though, is the swish swoosh nature of driving over

passes - I used to get very carsick as a child - still do in the back seat -

and I'm sure that's why I hate driving over passes - the thought of throwing

up, and then driving over the edge because I'm being sick... bleuch!

Emma - I do like the idea of ringing the AA - another travel story of yours

that's had me quietly in stitches!

I drove with my husband's cousin from Lyons to Nice when I was 3mo

pregnant. We'd somehow missed the autoroute, definitely my preferred

choice, and ended up going round these tiny roads with me doing about

10 miles an hour. My biggest shock was turning a corner and seeing a

cloud in front of me.

She's from NZ's South Island and used to such drives but I was a

wreck. The journey took us 8 hours! By contrast, when we drove back

via the autoroute/payage a few days later we did Nice to Eindhoven in

southern Holland in 11 hours!!!

Caroline,

In my family we have to draw lots to find out which poor b****r is going to

have to keep their eyes open as they drive over the Severn Bridge! (or even

that other one at the entrance to Cornwall, come to that, forgotten its

name, but that's usually better as the weather's always so awful that the

visibility is only about 6 feet so you can't see the drop!)

HOWEVER, I have kind of trained myself to do more and more " height " type

things - DH also doesn't like them, but being a bloke forces himself to do

them, so we're brave together, but respect each other's limits.

No way I'd be able to use the same approach with sp***rs, though...

You could go all the way up to the M50 and use Tintern Abbey as your excuse

for the detour, though!!! (actually you could probably get away with only

going as far as Gloucester and then cross country to Hereford and down from

there)

Anneliese and Toddler Tim who has now gained weight two months in a row

hooray and said his first sentences on Saturday hooray hooray!
