Yes I do. When we moved to this house DS2 ( was 4, DS3 was 10 mths.

They were going to be sharing a room and we already had bunk beds

which the older two used to sleep in in the other house. So DS2 went

straight into the bottom bunk and DS3 was still in the cot. Often I

would go to check them when I went to bed to find the 4 yr old asleep

in the top bunk! Once DS3 started to climb out of the cot he went

into the bottom bunk, but he was about 2 1/2 by then. However, we

then moved him into his own room and bought him a mid-height cabin

bed. This has been brilliant because he is wary of climbing out of it

himself which means he always stays in his bed. But going back to the

bunk beds, I never had anything untoward happen.

DsS and his half brother at his mums house have bunks and when they

got them he was 4 and his brother was 2. He has the bunks with a

couple of rails to hold them in, (just in case)

Yes - that certainly is a drawback of having a bed wetter in the top bunk -

I have happy memories (NOT!!) of hauling myself up there heavily pregnant to

change the sheets!

My three year old stepson has just moved house with his mum, and she bought

him a bunk bed, and he loves it. He is quite capable of climbing doen on his

own. He slept in a bed from 18 months old, as we didnt have a cot for him,

and he had a guard rail...he was fine.

I think it just depends on the maturity of your kids...and your gut

instincts. DSS has always been very independent....not into being wrapped in

cotton wool. If he was at all nervous about the move into a bed, we wouldnt

have done it. Having night lights on all night is also helpful, just incase

they decide to get out of bed)

Hope that helps.

Just wanted to point out that the recommendation is that you do not put a child

younger than 6 in a top bunk..

Lonnie Phoebe & Eloisa's mama

& expecting a Christmas delivery...

My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what you

start.

So far today, I have finished 2 bags of chips and a Chocolate cake.

I feel better already.

Oh yes, absolutely, but don't you think this is partly just to cover

themselves in case your 3 yr old falls out and then you want to sue?

It is like all safety issues really, you have to go with the really

important ones (like fire guards) but some you can get by without (I

never had stairgates for my youngest and he just learned to go up and

down no problem, never fallen downstairs at all). Anyhow, I've had

years of bunkbeds with " underage " children in and never one accident

(touch wood of course).

Yes I do think it is a matter of judging your child but sadly yes I have seen a

accident in a child using a top bunk before aged 6.. (she fell down hit her eye

on the corner of their bedside table - and yes they had a bed guard up - it is

now 3 years later and she still has trouble with that eye..) I am not trying to

scare anyone but personally I would not put Phoebe or Eloisa in one..

I never put stair gates up for Phoebe when we moved to where we are now (she

was 18 months) and she never fell down the stairs. but my friends child has

fallen down the stairs twice with and without stair gates... different from

child to child..
