Guest guest
You know I don't even know Phil's current CEA but it was 45 when he started in June 2003 and has been about 2.5 since Dec.2003. His other blood counts have been up and down and he has been on and off Procrit and Neulasta. This week even with the latest dx of increased cancer mets his blood counts were all at or near normal which they hadn't been since his last chemo break. Also Phil keeps saying he feels better now than he has in years. There doesn't seem to be a one size fits all list to go by with this disease. You just have to look at what is and isn't normal for you. Narice
Guest guest
Living in doubt for 6 weeks is unacceptable. A few months ago my cea went from 3.1 to 3.6 (back down to 2.6 now) on a Wed. My ONC had a PET set up for Friday-two days- and called me back Friday night to say scan was OK so I would not have to worry over the weekend.. No way I could wait six weeks. This week the ONC called tp say last week's CT was clean but did show one enlarged lymph node but it was probably nothing. He gave me the option of driving up tomorrow for a PET or any time at my convience. I will go in two weeks, Cancer is bad enough without having to wait around and worry when there may not be a problem. If you are worried tell them you want another scan and/or cea now. Guest guest
My onc says he can get a PET approved if he says he needs it for staging or treatment plan. Not all tumors exhibit cea so you can not wait for cea to change. My cea has never been above 3.6 and I have had 3 CTs and this will be my 2nd PET since the end of May 2005. Wait only as a last resort

Guest guest
Would some you please post your CEA history. My husband's was up (still below normal), but the Dr. called and left a message saying he wanted to check it again in 6 weeks. Of course, we are terrified and just when I was LEARNING to not let this cancer thing consume me. He had told him not to come back for 3 months other than coming in at 4 weeks to check his red blood cells (high end of normal). For some reason he was a little concerned about them. He was 4.3 before Stage IIIC surgery in October. Nov. 2004 - 1.7 (2 weeks after surgery) June 2005 - 2.2 (1 month after chemo) July 2005 - 1.2 Sept 2005 - 2.4 The Dr. said since it had doubled in just 2 months, he wanted to check it again and if it was up any, he would send him for a PET/CT then. The surgeon has always stressed the fact that it is not the number, but the direction. But what does it mean if the direction is up and down? I sure will be glad when we get some CEA history under our belt and learn what his means to him. On top of that he is having cataract surgery the 23rd, and he has chosen a new multi-focal lens which he will have to pay about $3,000 out of pocket for (both eyes). Now he asked me today should he cancel it. He had already made the remark that he sure hoped he got his moneys worth. I told him he better not cancel. Also, has anyone else finished chemo and had to have cataract surgery. The Dr. said the one in his right eye is " very large " and the one in the other eye would be that large in 4 to 6 months as he had a very fast growing kind??? He is 57. Worrying again (never stopped really), MA
Guest guest
I feel that I know the reason for the wait. The CEA is still normal, and our insurance would not approve a PET in July (he had a CT then). The Dr. thought he could get a PET approved because he had a " hypermetabolic " 4.7 iliac node that the radiologist said could be Post-of inflammation or cancer noted on a PET scan he had about 4 weeks after surgery. The CT he had in July said the Lymph nodes were " stable " , low-density lesion on the left kidney probably a cyst, and a high density gallbladder which was possibly stones. But you are right, waiting is just awful (especially for an impatient person). Thanks for responding, I know normal is under 3.0 but his buddy that finished chemo in July told him hers was .2 so I really don't know if his should/could/would ever be that low. Guest guest
CEA values are affected by handling and the process itself. Samples are temperature sensitive and can vary 10-20% if not maintained in a conmtrolled environment or shaken too much during transit. Check the lab manuals and they say each analysis is +/- 10%. Just leaving a sample sitting around a room too long and normal sampling error can raise the error band to 25%. Unless things are done right your CEA might have gone down when the reported value incresed from 5.4 to 6. Bottom line -get some graph paper and plot trends and try (yeah) not to even think about short term results they may not mean anything. Guest guest
Those CEA levels are all still well within the NORMAL range. I suspect the doc just wants to be sure since it had doubled since the previous test, albeit still within normal limits. I know it's hard not to worry, but don't stress yourself out over it..
