Guest guest
I know asbestos causes cancer but I'm sure I've read it as a possible cause for IPF. Washing clothes would have definately exposed you to it. Have any of you heard of asbestos being a cause for PF? My husband had the fibers in his lungs and I washed his clothes for many years. My oxygen therapist said that that could have caused it but I haven't seen anything about it anywhere. Beverley Joy, 70, IPF, 1-08 -- Dyane L. BillingsSenior Staff AccountantBall & McGraw P.C. Guest guest
Yes Beverley.. Google Asbestos & Pulmonary Fibrosis together or look up Asbestosis.. there's been huge court cases for compensation in Australia for this disease from Hardie Industries. People in the Navy & Air Force have also developed PF as a result of exposure while doing maintenance work. An American Film Actor Steve ????? died of PF as a result of Asbestosis.. he worked on Brake linings in one War or another.. You should be investigated for it since washing your husband's clothes would definitely have exposed you to the fibres. I believe that that is my cause and knowing for sure that others have gotten it that way makes me feel better. No known cause is kind of hard to handle. My husband had the fibers in his lungs but he didn't get asbestosis. He died of sleep apnea. I was told that large men can get the fibers and not get the disease. He was a large man. I know about the lawsuits. There are so many involved that if they haven't already been settled no one will get much anyhow. I don't suppose that you know Dierdre Roche do you? Australia is a large country. You may have heard of her though. She was in the papers and had her picture on the cover of magazines. That was a lot of years ago though. Guest guest
Beverly, Asbestosis is one of the many forms of pulmonary fibrosis. All that PF means is lung scarring. It can be caused by many many things, from auto-immune disease processes to exposure to a toxin like asbestos. Does your doctor know that you had exposure to asbestos? This is definitely something if you should bring to his/her attention. Hope that helps! My primary doctor said that she didn't find it on my ex-rays but they did find interstitial pneumanitis a couple of years ago and they ignored it until I went in and told them that I was having trouble breathing. My oxygen was at 74%. They put me in the hospital but they didn't send me to a specialist. My cardiologist did that when my level was down in his office. Thank you. I appreciate any information I can get. Now I'm wondering about my fingernails. They are terrible and nothing I do helps. They chip and break and they are cut off into the quick. Nothing I do helps. Sometimes they look like they are separating from the finger. I suppose that is from the lack of oxygen. Beverley Joy
Guest guest
Bev, Just got on the board this am and saw you are having problems with your nails.. I also had to quit wearing acrylic nailsbecause of separating from the nail bed. My GP said I have probably developed an allergy to them , that stopped that, So5 years later while going through all the tests and hearing all the bad junk I had to see my thyroid Dr. I had Graves disease which can cause the same problems with the nails. Also it is just part of the clubbing for some of us.I OF COURSE all the nail problems.. I keep them trimmed and they don't look to bad. However, my nails are HARD. I think that was the prednisone. They used to brake, chip and peel. It is this nasty causing it I would guess. Guest guest
Boy I hate even thinking about asbestos on clothes... worked on the Tampa International Air Port. start to finnish.. They blew asbestos on the high ceilings. It was used as an insulation back then. Early to mid 70's..HHUUUMMMM. Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida, IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." My friend's dad died of asbestosis after working as a lineman for the telephone company for years. She was told by doctors at the time that because of the asbestos in his clothes that just by being in the same house she would probably eventually show signs of the disease. Pulmonary fibrosis was never mentioned, though. Bill IPF '08A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!

I have a slight thyroid problem so maybe it is just everything lumped together. Everytime I bump a nail on something it breaks down into the quick. I hate it but I guess that I will have to live with it the same as I do this canula in my nose. Beverley Joy, 70, IPF, 1-
