Guest guest
Francesca, I had no end of trouble getting Tim to take any liquid other than breastmilk from the breast - from about 2 mths I expressed every day and gave the milk to him every evening. He'd take it for a few days then strop... finally (with help from this list) I realised that when he didn't take the bottle or beaker he just wasn't thirsty! Went on to 4 parts ebm to 1 formula, started upping the formula content till it was all formula, at 7 months, and then went to bf on waking and at bedtime (and if he woke in the night, or if he was poorly) but giving 2 beakers of formula during the day. He rarely drank much formula - usually he'd have a total of 2 oz from each beaker - but as he clearly didn't get dehydrated I stayed calm. He wouldn't touch water or juice. When he was about a year old, I was having some Sainsbury's raspberry, peach and banana smoothie - he came over and stuck his paw in the glass, so I gave him some in his beaker - he loved it! The first non-milk drink he'd take! So that's what he gets for a sugar/Vitamin high... At 17 months he was taking longer and longer to bf as he'd take both breasts twice at each feed... we had one really dreadful evening where nothing worked, until finally at about midnight I got him a beaker of milk which he finished then went down like a lamb. Right, I thought, time to stop. That was his last bedtime feed and at 18 months he had his last breakfast time feed - and he's slept through ever since! (having always been a good sleeper, at just over a year he started waking once or twice a week) In retrospect I should just have packed it in 3 months earlier. So, hang in there if you want to give up bf! ps hugs over your furry companion. Anneliese and Tim (now 21 months old!) Problem solved - boob to cup ..... sort of! Some of you might remember that I was having a problem persuading DD2 (14 months yesterday) to drink milk from a cup. I hit on a solution by accident. I drink my milk with chocolate powder in and DD2 always jumps up and down and demands a bit off a spoon. So I put a straw in my glass and she drank quite a bit so I have now bought one of those cups with a short integral straw and she is happily guzzling away at her chocolate milk. After four days of this I thought - great time to drop the morning breastfeed - so when she woke I took her and DD1 downstairs and did their milk. I then took DD1 and DD2 back up to DH (with a cup of tea for him) and sat DDs on the bed. DD2 noticed the boobie pillow (U-shaped cushion) and pointed and said " Dat, Bubbas " . I said No and distracted her by going into DD1's room and starting to her dressed. DD2 wandered off and returned a minute or so later carrying the boobie pillow which is about the same size as her. She dumped it on DD1's bedroom floor, pointed again and said " Dat, now " ! Well how could I resist .... Francesca (still BF-ing DD2 2x per day) Mum to Kezia (3) and Lily (14 months)
