Guest guest
JB, Sorry no one on AM got back to you...I guess that's cause I was not online...hee, hee...Usually I reply back quickly but I was sick for a few days. We use dmsa/ala on Andy's for my 5 yr old and 12 yr. We began when he was 3 and did/dose not swallow caps either. You can mix the stuff into a small amount of food or liquid that he will take. Then be sure to follow it with a lot of water. We give my son a water bottle to glugg down as much as feels the need to after his dose. This way no ala is left in the mouth. Ala is the one that can irritate their mouth. For my son, we began using a tiny bit of juice in a medicine syringe for him to suck up. As he got a bit older and hated the " smelly juice " we switched to miniature peanut butter cups. I split them in half, put the powder on the pb and put the top back on. He chews those up. You will have to find what will work for him the best. Some kids do find with the bit of juice. Just don't mix it into too much liquid or he won't finish it. Since it is virtually impossible to measure 3.5 mg you can go to 5 mg safely and start there. Divide up the 25mg ones from VRP. Open the cap on a small plate, divide the powder into five piles. Then you have five of his doses. It's a bit of mixing and tinkering, but you get used to it. I found it easiest to pre-divide the whole round up and put them in empty capsules..then a zippy bag. That way at dose time all I have to do is take out once cap, open it, sprinkle the powder on whatever he's going to eat it on..and done! I don't advise that you premix a bunch of juice and keep it in the fridge..it will taste nasty after a while. You want to mix right before giving. Make sure that the juice is cold to dull the sulphury smell/taste. You can use a bit of pudding or applesauce or whatever to put it in too. The first few rounds take some getting used to. he may wake up fully or he may not. My son was pissed off and didn't want to drink it at first but I stood my ground and told him I would not let him go back to sleep until he took it. By the second round he stopped the fussing. By the third he was barely waking in the night. Now..he doesn't remember me waking him to take it. He doesn't open his eyes. I say " time for dubby, sit to mommy " and I help him sit up. I put the stuff in his mouth and tell him " chew and breath through you nose " he does. Then I had him the water and say " swig " . He does then I say " sleep " and he lays back down and out. Your boy is little so it should be a bit easier. I would practice taking juice from the medicine dropper during the day as a game. My son names this " dubby " . I take a dubby, mom takes a dubby. Then we moved onto explain that dubby would come in the night. We talked about it a bit in that way, to help prepare him. Guest guest
Thanks, and I found and ordered the 25mg from kirkman along with their vitamins as per the McCarthy book that my wife bought. Its going to be pure hell to get him to take the DMSA and ALA, during the day... even worse for the night dose, I reckon. He doesn't listen if I tell him to eat or drink something to begin with, and he certainly won't wash it down with water afterwards. Its going to mostly likely turn into either a force-feeding or a missed / spilled dose. I will try, but even if I put it in a dropper and squirt it in his mouth, he might just spit it out. We'll see.... - JB > > > > Ok, so nobody got back to me on the autism-mercury board yet, and I > > want to ask here. > > > > From the Faq, it looks like you start with 1/8mg per pound of child. > > So for my 29 pound son that would be about 3.6mg of DMSA and ALA every > > 3 hours. > > > > How do you measure such a small amount accurately? Guest guest
I guess I would try putting it in one of his *favorite* foods or drinks? Or something that he *only* gets when you're chelating? I also think Kirkman's will send you a sheet with some ideas/suggestions on how to get kids to take stuff, so maybe something on there will work. I also remember reading on A-M parents reporting that it wasn't as bad as they imagined it to be, or after a few rounds it was no problem. So try to be patient and positive about it, and hopefully it will go ok. Alot of parents are doing it, so it is possible!-------Jackie In frequent-dose-chelation jb43public wrote: Thanks, and I found and ordered the 25mg from kirkman along with their vitamins as per the McCarthy book that my wife bought.
