Thank you anyhow. I will just be happy that I have a check coming in for life. Even if it isn't enough to have the best medications like all of the druggiesn and alcoholics who get it. That makes me angry not to mention other people I know who fake being disabled and the taxpayers get to support them. Sorry. I'm very depressed tonight and lrtting off steam. I should be happy i guess. I went dancing last night and my guy carries the oxygen while we dance. I'd rather have a husband, though. Maybe someday I will tell you all why I divorced my husband of 45 years even though I still loved him. Beverley Joy

Ken,

I would caution though that an individual has to have worked and paid into the SS system collect SSDI. Unfortunately just being disabled is not enough. It works like insurance, you pay into the system by way of your FICA "contribution" and once you reach retirement age or become disabled you can collect the benefit. If you have not paid in, you can't collect.

You are correct however that your financial status or what you own is not counted at all in whether or not you are eligible for SSDI.

if you are phyiscaly disabled and unable to work you are eligible for, and intitled to, SSDI, no matter what you own. it's county and state welfare that limits you on what you can own and how much money you have in the bank or in other assets.

call SSI and they can answer any and all questions.

i found it to be very simple, but, a little time consuming.

I'm probably not eligible for anything. If they don't count your house I might be eligible. I know that for some things they don't. It isn't the money as much as the medical that I would like to be able to get. Bev

Beverly Joy, Several thoughts you might check into...If you were married for 45 years and have not remarried, I believe you may still be eligible for SS benefits from that marriage??? I think it is after 10 years of marriage. If you are under a certain amount of monthly cash income, you would be eligible for adult public assistance that automatically gives you medicaid that pays the amount of your medication not covered by medicare. You are allowed to keep your home no matter how much it is worth and a car. I know, I am there and all of my medical is covered.. I have a nice house and a nice car, I just will never be able to buy another new car because of my limited income. I get the best of medication, my tracleer is $8,000 a month, because of medicare, medicaid and or compassionate provisions, they are only (ha ha ) charged $4,000 per month. I receive a monthly statement from my medi gap insurance showing what medicare pays, what they pay

and what is paid by medicaid.

As you said about all of the drunks and druggies, I add smokers, I don't feel one bit guilty about what I get. I went to college, worked over 35 years, never got in any kind of trouble or did anything harmful to my body so why shouldn't I deserve the best of care available??? Probably divorced him for the same reason I did mine; to keep my sanity. There are so many reasons that fit into that.

Letting off steam is a healthy thing. I read one time that when you don't tell the truth about how you feel about things, no one will ever know the real you and you will never know if you are really loved for your true self...it is also a good way to show people that they could become a better person by taking a higher standard of behavior...wow I got on my rant with that one... also, people can be married in God's eyes if not on the official states marriage records...by the way adults can live together and still can receive these individual benefits....

I went to that site and filled out the questionaire but my new wireless printer didn't print out all of it. I hate to start over again. I did find that there were special pamphlets for people who worked in government jobs where they didn't take out SS. My husband had 31 years in Civil Service. So ai will check into that. He didn't work quite long enough on other jobs to get his 40 quarters. Thanks for the link. Beverley Joy, 70, IPF, Idaho

Lat year my income was low enough for me to get help with my meds but since my ex died I get too much money. I have gotten where all but one of my meds are inexpensive generics. The one that isn't is Lyrica. I have to have that. I think that a prescription for that is $189. My prescription plan is $295 deductible so one prescription for Lyrica should almost cover than. Then the plan kicks in until that nasty old gap comes along. If I had to take anything like you are taking I would have to apply for help from the drug company. I cut my Lyrica from 3 a day to 2 a day. I was going to apply for help on that ine but my computer had a problem and I lost all of my bookmarks. I divorced my husband because he was a member of a cult. He, of course, didn't believe it was a cult until the leader was arrested and sent to prison for molesting and raping the little girls. This was truly a cult and that man controlled everyone. My son is 48 and he was in it too. He was never allowed to marry. I still loved my husband but I stayed in my house and felt like I would die if I didn't get away. My husband didn't live long after his life with the cult fell apart. My son is all mixed up too. I despise that man. I wanted him to get life but he got 24 1/2 years. That's not enough for all of the marriages (mine wasn't the only one) that he destroyed and all of the other lifes he destoyed. I am usually a very quiet person but every now and then I vent. I will never remarry now. Bob and I don't live together. We don't even live in the same state. He lives twenty miles away in Washington. We do spend a lot of time together. I will miss him when I sell my house and move. He goes to the coast usually once a month to his boat so I will still see him then. If he had wanted to get married I might have made that mistake before but not now. We are just too different to ever live together.

I am not on SS and I am not eligible. Saturday night was fun. We have only gone dancing twice since I got my oxygen. We are members of the Eagles and that is where we dance. There were people there who obviously hadn't seen us dance before. It was fun to watch what they did when they saw us.

Lyrica

Not knowing what you're taking the Lyrica for it's hard to guess at other choices. However, I have taken Lyrica and I reverted to Neurontin (Gabapentin) because of the same issue you face. Lyrica is a relatively new drug (was brand new when I first took it) and in most cases for nerve issues, they were prescribing Neurontin before it. Now, it might not work for you, but the Neurontin does work almost as well for me as the Lyrica and lots more history and fewer risks of side effects.

Also if you haven't been there, here is the link to Pfizer's (manufacturer of Lyrica) patient assistance programs.

Beverley Joy...boy oh boy do I (and Bruce) know about the nasty donut hole! I fell into it last year in Aug. and our savings went down as though we had been robbed!

I changed the meds that were costing so much...we can't fall in the hole again.

I'm sorry to read about your marriage. I can only imagine the fear and betrayal you felt.

Many here on the board have experienced bad marriages so all the more important to now be with those we trust and know care about us.

It's great that you have Bob to do things with. Twenty miles isn't very far.

Do take care BJ (is it ok to call you that?)

Beverely Joy.... a hundred years ago I belonged to the Eagles in Medford OR and went dancing there all the time.

Do they still have smoking in there, since it's a private club?

if eligible for welfare, you may also be elegible for food stamps, etc

some of the drug companies will provide the prescriptions if you are at the poverty level

Hello Beverly,

If you didn't work I don't think you are eligible for SSDI, but you might be eligible for SSI - Social Security Income. You might check. It has nothing to do with what you paid in - it's income-based totally. You have to have assets of less than $2,000.

Depending on where you live qualifying for SSI automatically qualifies you for other assistance programs you might benefit from. It's not much - I think something like $550 a month now (check ) but every little bit helps. You might check it out.

I am not eligible for welfare. I have decided to forget about it and be happy that I have a check coming in for life. I just have to be careful how I spend it.
