Sorry to hear of your daughter's struggles. As one who does suffer from

mental illnesses, I understand the difficulty of them. I also have

bipolar friends and have seen their struggles.

As to the hospital and catching something, I opened the online newspaper

this morning and the lead article was infection in hospitals. Health

care associated infections account for 1.7 million illnesses and 99,000

deaths each year according to CDC. Now, the last two times has

been to the ER she has gotten sick immediately thereafter. The last time

was sadly ironic. There was a full safety presentation rotating on the

computer in her section. Several of the slides dealt with cleanliness

and other infecting issues. Meanwhile the floor in the room was

absolutely filthy. It had crumbs of cheese crackers, streaks of who

knows what, accumulated dirt and grime.

>

> I do believe most people think cause I do not post much I am not

really part of this group. However, I do read posts every day -

normally.

> This past week has been a huge acception. Wednesday night my daughter

who is bipolar was hospitalized for the third time in a month. The

first time they released her in a lot of RA pain due to the inability to

give her the meds for it combined with the lithium. They also had her

on so much uppers and downers that she had no clue. So they readmitted

her and changed her to a bit of other meds and a different bipolar med.

However, this one can only be increased by 25 mg every 2 weeks and 100

is theraputic. So they released her on 25 mg. That was Monday last

week. On Wed. night she took all the meds she had in her house.

Luckily her sister only left 3 days' worth there. However she was still

knocked out and spent the next day with an airway in and in the ICU. I

sat in the ICU all day thurs and friday with her and until she woke up

thurs night we did not know if or the extent of brain damage. Luckily

she is not appearing brain damaged in any way but possible short term

memory but we will not know until her bipolar is stablized.

call it. I call it locked away from harm.

> Yesterday I ended up at my doctors' being put on steroids once again

as well as antibiotics. We do not know if it is stress alone or if

someone in the ICU had something that I caught. They can not tell me if

there was a patient in there with something that I could have gotten

even without giving me a name and there were several patients in there.

They are siting HIPPA. I say that by just giving the information to my

doctor regarding something like we have a patient with bronchial

pneumonia for example in our unit they are not violating anything HIPPA.

So here I sit not knowing something that could be vital to my own

health.

Jean,

We have all kinds of members with different levels of participation. Everyone is free to use this group precisely the way it suits them. For some it means posting several times a day all the way to the other end of the spectrum to those who never post but choose to just read messages. It's all fine and everyone is a member of the board. No one thinks that you are not a member because you post less frequently. You are doing what works for you.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughters problems. It just sounds like a nightmare for all of you who love her and for her too of course. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I'm glad your doctor started you on an antibiotic and even some pred to keep any inflammation from taking hold. Please look after yourself. Remember you are no good to your daughter if you are very sick. Rest, eat well and take your medicine. You're in my prayers!

Hi Jeane!

Sorry to hear of your struggles and your daughter's struggles with health issues. I just wanted to comment on visiting the hospital as a visitor who has IPF. My dad was admitted to the hospital before he died in 2006. The first weekend he was in our local hospital, my brother & his wife didn't visit. They had been with us on Friday but on Saturday & Sunday they had picked up an upper respiratory infection. Voila!!! Guess who got it next? I did, of course. By then my dad had been transferred to a larger hospital where he had a lung biopsy. I had to wear masks when I visited him in the SICU. I kept getting worse A long 3 day weekend was coming up and I decided to stay home and rest as I was still very sick. I hated not being able to visit him and be with him because I was so sick. I always require at least a month to recover from these respiratory infections and it is so hard on me because of IPF. I am not blaming anyone for my respiratory infection because I am sure the germs were floating everywhere as I walked into the lobby of the hospital through a maze of people who were smoking all around the hospital door!

Toodles!

if you knew in advance that someone had pneumonia, would it have kept you from your daughter's bedside?

Dear Jean,

I'm so sorry to read of your tough time right now... & that of your daughter. My much loved older brother has suffered since teenage years with mental health issues... eventually diagnosed as Bi-polar disorder. His quality of life has been severely compromised. I've witnessed & felt how upsetting & difficult that journey is.

Keeping you in my thoughts Jean......never feel as though your arn't a member of this Forum... we all come n' go from time to time. Just know that you ARE part of this Air Family.

Hugs & a big shoulder Squeeze......
