Guest guest
Power of Attorney can include financial stuff. I have one for my Aunt that includes everything (except lock box access). She thought it included that and was informed by the bank that it would not allow me and my husband access to it. She had to go to the bank and put us on it, and then we had to take two photo id's to the bank. Also, we have been put on her checking and savings account as well as the lock box so that we don't even need the power of attorney. My Aunt had hers drawn up years ago. She broke her hip about a year ago, so we found out about the lock box thing quite by accident. At that time, she had us added to her bank accounts as authorized signatures. Our Hospice maintains a lists of sitters/caregivers for hire. With my mother-in-law, she was having to pay for the Skilled Care Facility out of pocket (after so many days). I was fortunate that my sister is a SAHM, and we could pay her a decent salary to stay during the day which was still cheaper for my MIL than Skilled Care. My husband and I also work about 1 mile from my house, so we went home for lunch and could run home if she needed us to. So to get around this, she my sister and i put our name on mothers bank account, then took mothers name off. the bank let us do this, that way we could continue to pay the bills after she was gone. you may look into this. Yes, and Diane...and not to even entertain the idea of continuing this discussion, but sometimes you " forget " little things...My sister is an attorney and I've worked in law offices all my life....and we " forgot....just plain didn't think " that the " Power " doesn't continue after her death...so even though I was paying her bills for the last several years, once she passed, her bills could not be paid until the PR was appointed 3 mos. later.(didn't expect Mom to pass... she wasn't sick and when she became sick, we were too involved with that to " think " !!!)
