My dog Basil

I have been very quiet this weekend as on Friday evening my lovely

brave Border Collie, Basil, lost his long fight against arthritis and

we made the decision to have him put to sleep.

His arthritis was spreading to his spine and he could not walk very

far without his back legs going all wobbly so he was having a few

little trips round to the post box and back, but he was happy with

that and pottering round the garden.

He was fine on Friday morning and at lunchtime. Then I took DD1 off

to swimming and when I returned, we sat outside with our ice creams

(DD2 was asleep in her cot). I told Basil that when DD2 woke up I

would take him for a walk. He was happy and bouncy and wanted to go.

Then I went inside, noticed their water bowl was empty, filled it up

and heard Basil whine (which he never ever did). I went over to him

and he could not get up - one of his back legs had gone. DH had come

home and so we helped him up together and moved him to the carpet but

he was puffing and panting and obviously in pain. We gave him more

painkillers but really we knew it was hopeless. DH took him to the

vet and they confirmed what he said so he brought him home again and

the vet came round half an hour later to put him to sleep.

Before he did so though Basil had a huge Easter egg (don't tell DD1!)

and died very peacefully being cuddled by us both (in floods of

tears). Way to go eh with a belly full of chocolate!!

Missing him so much as since his bladder op last year he followed me

everywhere (even accompanying me on middle of the night excursions to

the DDs). We both feel though it was the right decision and are

relieved that he was not in pain for that long and was a happy bouncy

bean-full dog right up to three hours before he died. Sorry to be so

depressing .......

Francesca (feeling very down :-((((( )

So sorry to hear this :(

I spent yesterday with my dad (and family) and their ancient Border Collie

Corrie. She has been so ill and just shuffles around looking morose. I wish

so much that they would have the courage to put her to sleep as she is

suffering so much and there is only so much you can do. You definately did

the right thing although it must feel terrible to you at the moment - at

least his last moments will have been of eating that yummy chocolate!
