Guest guest
Dear Sue: I am so sorry to hear that your mom's cancer has returned. This must be difficult. I assume by your note that she did not have metastatic cancer 6 years ago and that it was completely removed. How often have her doctor's scanned your mom since she finished her treatment? Please let us know how she is doing. in California
Guest guest
I don't know mucn about it. She had colon cancer and they removed the tumor and some of her colon. She had chemo for 6 months and reacted well. She was seeing the dr regularly and the appts have gotten further and further apart. She had a colonoscopy about a year ago and that was clean. She say the oncologist in May and the markers did show anything. It is still not in the colon but they believe (waiting for results) that it is colon cancer returned and spread. I agree with Lydia, too many people I know or a relative of someone I know has some form of cancer. I wish that weren't the case. People should die of old age not some debilitating disease. My mom is only 63. I am part of the sandwich generation (I think). I have been involved with moms care since the cancer in 1999 (it was followed by a stroke, but you can't see many signs of that). She doesn't live with us but we see her every week and talk regularly. I also have a husband and two kids (7 & 4) plus normally work full time. Thanks for being here. Guest guest
Sue: It sounds like they were not doing follow up CT and PET scans since she had been cancer free for 6 years. The CT might have shown the cancer earlier and the PET scan certainly would have. It also sounds like she was early stage colon cancer when it was first discovered since the surgery was only in the colon. The 6 month chemo is now standard following the surgery (at least for metastatic colon cancer which I have). My guess is that they will put her on chemo and probably Avastin to try to shrink the liver and lung tumors. You mentioned a stroke -- could that have been the result of her chemo treatments? We are all here for you and we understand how you feel. Our families are also devastated as we sometimes are. Please continue to post and let us know how your mom is doing and what they decide to do to treat her. Where are you and your mom living? I assume you have a major cancer center where she will be treated. My best, in California > > > > Dear Sue: > > > > I am so sorry to hear that your mom's cancer has returned.
