Guest guest
Hi Kirsten > I am just about to either string myself up or my DS. I know it is not > really his fault. .... I know the feeling Mari gags and spits when we try to give her anything other than Calpol. When she had an ear infection her temperature was 'going thru the roof' but she can gag and spit whilst screaming and struggling with the best of them, the Nurse quite rightly called her 'a little tyrant'. She only has to see a medicine bottle and the mouth clams shut with hand clasped tightly over it! Only things we came up with were: * getting different antibiotics that had to be taken less times a day than the others. * as you say literally pinning her down and squirting it into her mouth - hurt me more than her * once she was eating a bit more we mixed her antibiotics in with rusk and milk and the neurofen in with her milk. * bribing her with, if you take the medicine then you can have a sweet - only worked once though and then she said she didn't want the sweets! > How long do antibiotics take to work? (if he is keeping any down) I would say within a day - if he keeps any down - but this is purely based on my own experience with Mari. > Can the doctor just give him an injection of them instead? Sorry, don't know but it was never suggested as an option to us. > Desperate and worn out. {{{hugs}}} Jenni (& Gethyn) *** 17yrs yesterday! *** Mari 3yrs (HB), Babi Bach exp.09/2001
Guest guest
Isaac has never needed medicine until last week when he had the high temperature. He refused Disprol Paracetamol (like Calpol but the one that loves) and we had a real battle with him, which in the end meant he got about 1/2 teaspoon full. had the high temperature at the weekend and he just takes it with no problems, always has done. Isaac then decided that he would take it and stood at the side of begging for medicine. SAHM to 3 boys Jack 7, 5 and Isaac 2 Trisha
Guest guest
> > Josh usually takes calpol off a spoon willingly, until I introduced the > > antibiotics, then he went off of everything! This is what happened with Mari, it was Neurofen that we tried to introduce and it really put her 'medicine radar' up!! Some of those antibiotics taste disgusting, the allegedly banana flavour one is particularly nasty and they 'catch' in the throat as well - yuk, yuk, yuk - moral of the tale for me is that I always taste everything before trying to give it to her now - but the damage is done. She will now trust me with Calpol again but I tried Boots own paracetamol syrup the other day and she wasn't having it at all, despite me telling her it was Calpol for 'big girls'!! As for mixing it in with foods, works sometimes, like rusks with milk and antibiotics but other times she can smell it at 40 paces ( She loves olives though - mmmmmm olives stuffed with banana flavour antibiotics - yummy!!
