Obituary:

Ge orge W. Mathews, age 66, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at the -Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on October 3, 1942, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of W. and Edna Gail (Hofman) Mathews. Mr. Mathews was raised in Manhattan where he was a graduate of Manhattan High School. In 1961, Mr. Mathews was called into active duty with the United States armed services during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following his active duty he served periodically with the Army National Guard and Air National Guard until his honorable discharge in 1990. In 1965, Mr. Mathews took computer programming classes at a trade school in Kansas City, Missouri and later earned his BS degree in History at Kansas State University. He enjoyed working with computers. As a computer programmer he had worked at Kansas State University, for an accounting firm in Topeka, Kansas and for the Air National Guard. From 1998 until his retirement in 2006 he was a substitute teacher for K-12 classes in Manhattan and surrounding communities. Mr. Mathews enjoyed model railroading and collected HO scale model trains. He also enjoyed guns and target shooting, watching old westerns on television and was an avid reader. He loved music especially Blues, Jazz and music of the Big Band era and had an extensive collection of old 78 rpm records. He was a genealogist and enjoyed researching history, especially of the Civil War and World War periods. Most of all he loved to spend time with his three daughters. Following lung transplant surgery last fall, he was looking forward to speaking on and educating the public on the importance of organ and tissue donation. One of his last gifts was the donation of some of his organs and tissues at the time of his death. On December 29, 1962, he was united in marriage to Leonard. They later divorced and she survives in St. , Kansas. He later married the former K. (Chew) Bridges on October 8, 1988, in Manhattan and she survives of their home. Also surviving are three daughters: Leonard and her husband Bob of Wamego, Kansas, Pickler and her husband Mike of Manhattan, and Joanna Lee and her husband Damon of Manhattan. Two stepchildren: Kate Bridges of Phoenix, Arizona and Marcus Bridges and his wife Carey of Jefferson City, Missouri, his sister: Pat Gillis of St. sburg, Florida and five grandchildren: Cole and Grace Rightmeier, Hollis and Leonard and Collin Bridges. He is also survived by his close friend, Herb Kalmar of Chillicothe, Missouri. Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by his parents, by his step father: Elmer Farmer and by his brother-in-law: Gillis. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends during20a visitation prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
