Guest guest
My son was way low on his ferritin test. When you eat a meal with meat drink a glass of OJ or other similar juice grapefruit etc. It helps the body absorb iron. Low iron/ferritin Hi All, What are the recommendations for low ferritin? Is it 200mg of elemental iron per day? And it what form is best? I don't have time right now, but I will tell you my iron story when I get a chance. Keeping ferritin and iron on the low normal side, as Andy says is best. Otherwise it just causes more oxidative stress, and your body dumps it in an attempt to protect itself. Andy recommends a ferritin level between 30-70. I believe the hormone groups recommend higher, and to take lots of iron a day, but I don't think they understand the toxicity part of this.----------Jackie Is it 200mg of elemental iron per day? And what form is best? ---------I think that is the dosage recommended by regular doctors and on the NTH board I believe. And that is usually ferrous sulfate, which is the least absorbable. Us toxic folks might not tolerate that kind and amount. I didn't. Ferrous gluconate was easier on my stomach than the sulfate. Andy does say that supplementing iron when you're toxic might make you feel worse. In that case, don't do it. But in some cases it is extremely low, like mine was, only 4, so I did need to raise mine some. Andy says the best way to do this is by increasing your antioxidants, and then your body might naturally raise your iron levels. I believe this helps. So if you are going to supplement iron, I recommend you take plenty of Vit C also. Anyway, this is what worked for me. told me to take a highly absorbable form of iron, called IronSorb by Jarrow, and to make sure I take it with a meal and plenty of stomach acid (Betaine HCl), and of course plenty of Vit C. It only has 18mg of elemental iron, but this has worked for me and raised my ferritin to 51. So that is what I would recommend, and red meat also. I have gone through spells of craving it intensely, so I think my body was ready to correct this deficit.---------Jackie (I guess I told you most of my iron story anyway! There is a little more though.) Thanks, Dean
